As expected, the flawed New York Islanders went down to the Carolina Hurricanes in five games. They made the playoffs mostly due to the coaching change to Patrick Roy, and the late-season goaltending switch to Semyon Varlamov, but the Isles were once again undone because they cannot score enough.
Winnipeg surprisingly bowed out in five games to Colorado, mostly because their defensive game and the goaltending of likely Vezina winner Connor Hellebuyck deserted them or could not stand up to the Avs…take your pick.
Toronto and Nashville forced Game 6’s with 2-1 road wins. The Leafs got great goaltending from Joseph Woll and the Bruins seemed a bit verklempt in their first chance at eliminating Toronto. Don’t worry though, Game 6 is at Scotiabank Arena…where the Leafs have lost six playoff games in a row. The Preds have a better chance of extending their series to a deciding seventh game with the uncertainty between the pipes for Vancouver.
