The Columbus Blue Jackets allowed their weakness to weaken them once again. A four goal third period cost the road Jackets over the home Coyotes by the final score of 6-2 in debut games for James Malatesta and Josh Doan.

Period I

Mathieu Olivier fight with Liam O’Brien.

Boone Jenner opened the scoring with the mid-period powerplay goal for his 22nd of the season and 192nd of his career. The money makers Johnny Gaudreau and Zach Werenski had the assists.

Period II

Mattias Maccelli evened the game on the home team’s own powerplay for his 12th of the regular season with the apples going to Sean Durzi and Clayton Keller.

Rookie Josh Doan got the go-ahead goal for the Coyotes for his first career goal unassisted.

Erik Gudbranson dropped the gloves with Josh Brown.

Werenski evened the game late off the powerplay for his sixth of the year from the captain and Johnny Hockey.

Period III

The Coyotes would score 4 goals in 8:17 to steal the game and sweep the season series.

Doan got his second of the evening with the shirts coming off in his father’s club box. Maccelli and Matt Kesserling had the assists on the eventual game winner.

Nick Bjugstad recorded his 19th of the campaign next from Nick Schmaltz and Durzi.

Schmaltz got the first short handed goal of the evening for his 20th of the year from goalie Karel Vejmelka.

James Malatesta got his first career fight against Michael Carcone.

Dylan Guenther nabbed the other shorty for his 12th of the year unassisted with 11 seconds left in the game.

Players to Watch

Josh Doan became the first player to play for Arizona State, Tuscon, and the Coyotes. He also became the first Coyote to ever score 2 goals in his NHL debut.

James Malatesta had his first career fight in his first career game late in the third period.

Goalkeepers

Karel Vejmelka had an assist and 25 saves on 27 shots faced.

Elvis Merzlikins allowed 6 goals on 35 shots against for a 0.829 save percentage.

Special Note

Congratulations to the 2024 Women’s Ohio State Buckeyes for winning the Women’s National Championship! The Buckeyes defeated Wisconsin 1-0. Dunne had the lone goal.
