Quick Hits: November 27, 2023

1) The Flyers (11-9-1) have a busy week ahead. Today, they were originally slated to hold practice (11 a.m. ET) at the FTC in Voorhees. The practice was canceled this morning.

Tomorrow is a home game day against the Carolina Hurricanes (12-8-0), which will be the penultimate meeting of the four-game season series between the teams. The Flyers won't play head-to-head with the Canes again until they conclude the season series on March 24 in Raleigh.

On Wednesday, the Flyers have a practice in Voorhees scheduled before playing the New Jersey Devils at the Wells Fargo Center on Thursday for the first game of the season series. They'll play each other again on Dec. 19 and Feb. 17 in Newark before wrapping up against the Devils in Philly on April 13.

Friday is another practice day. On Saturday, the Flyers open a home-and-home set with the Pittsburgh Penguins at PPG Paints Arena. After a league-mandated off-day on Sunday, the Flyers go back at it with the Penguins in Philadelphia next Monday. The season series between the traditional arch-rivals will resume in Philly on January 8 and conclude back in Pittsburgh on February 25.

2) Today is the weekly "Mondays with Meltzer" edition of the Flyers Daily Podcast. Jason Myretetus and I broke down the Thanksgiving week games played against the Islanders and Rangers. Areas of focus include the successful defensive-minded adjustments the Flyers made on Saturday after some egregious breakdowns proved costly in the previous two games, the Flyers' power play struggles, and the strong play of goalie Samuel Ersson in November after struggling early in the season.

We also talk about why it would be beneficial to have both Bobby Brink and Morgan Frost in the lineup. Does the presence of Cam Atkinson in the lineup -- giving the Flyers three smallish (Frost) or small (Brink and Atkinson) forwards if all three are playing at the same time -- enter into the thinking of John Tortorella when he makes out his lineups? Is reluctant to go "too small"? (Note: This is a theoretical explanation that we don't know the answer to. It's a question that will have to be asked of "Torts" himself).

Lastly, Jason and I talk about the upcoming Flyers Alumni Game on January 26. Flyers Alumni Association president Brad Marsh is in the process of finalizing participants to fill the final two roster spot vacancies on the Flyers Alumni side. The Bruins Alumni are awaiting confirmation of two big-name additions to their roster. The biggest confirmed names on the Bruins' side are Ray Bourque and Al Iafrate.

3) Today (Cyber Monday) is the final day for the "Crazy Eights" sale on tickets for the Flyers Alumni vs. Bruins Alumni Game: Crazy Eights line of Fedyk-Lindros-Recchi, John LeClair, Mike Richards' return to the Orange and Black, Patrick Sharp's Flyers Alumni Team debut, Mike Knuble, blueline "dream pairing" of Mark Howe and Kimmo Timonen, reunion of the Bruise Brothers, Joe Watson's final Alumni Game as a player (seven decades as a regular in a Flyers/Flyers Alumni uniform), weekend-long reunion of nearly all the surviving members of the 1974 and 1975 Cup team alumni, several other Flyers Hall of Famers participating.

Through today only -- the Crazy Eights offer expires at midnight -- all upper-level tickets are just $8 apiece (the Recchi plan) or $88 for a pack of four lower-level tickets (the Lindros plan).

Note: Access to the pregame VIP reception -- a chance to mix-and-mingle with roughly 55 Flyers Alumni including the game participants and Cup team reunion attendees in the Shift4 Club with a full bar and buffet dinner -- is a separate, add-on purchase. It can be added on the final screen before checkout.
