Hunting for deals in Calgary

The Calgary Flames have some players that the rest of the league is eyeing. In particular, Toronto and Edmonton keep being mentioned. That’s what generates headlines. San Jose is generating headlines. Detroit still seems like a team that gets passed over. We all hope for an end to that, but it’s something you earn.

All that being said, a top 6 center, top 4 D or goaltender is certainly on the wishlist. Calgary has faced this bizarre exodus of talent, and there’s no way they want to lose anyone for free. Players having agents leak their desire to leave to the press, being blunt about wanting to move on, etc. This is my own personal wishlist:

Center:
Elias Lindholm. Kadri is a bit pricey, Backlund is 34. Lindholm is a Swede that has broken the 40 goal mark. A 6’1” right shot center heading toward free agency. The downside is the upcoming contract. We don’t know the ask, and if a bidding war starts, forget it. Just a wish.

Defense:

Noah Hanifin has been on my list for a while. He and Dougie Hamilton crossed paths (Dougie is my favorite truth be told). I think his presence would perk up the left side.

Add Nikita Zadorov to that list. His agent let it be know that the player wants out. Another boost to the left side.

These three may not move the needle for many of you, and of course it depends on the ask. I see plus side for the team and for the players. We don’t know the ask, and this is the time of year where it may be sky high. Closer to trade deadline things get a little more reasonable.
