Summary:
One quick note. PHR put up a blurb about Patrick Kane: Johnston believes that the clubs Kane is talking to are the Rangers, Buffalo Sabres, Florida Panthers, and the Detroit Red Wings.
It will be interesting to see where he goes. If he wants a shot at a cup Florida and NYR are probably the best bet.
For the game, the first wasn’t as bad as it’s been, and the Wings started outshooting the Habs in the second. Getting 1 point isn’t ideal, especially against a Montreal team that looked to be a much friendlier matchup. Yet, the scoring has dried up.
In an odd way, goaltending did cost Detroit the game. Reimer’s stick grab on the eventual OT goal scorer showed a lack of discipline and awareness. Detroit had their chances, they just couldn’t close it out. At the end of the season, if the Wings are outside of the playoff pic, this is one of the games that you wince at. It wasn’t the Bruins or Panthers. It wasn’t Toronto. It was a struggling team out of Montreal that had superior goaltending numbers out of their 3rd string goalie.
It’s tough to sugar coat, but this team gets harder to watch as the early season wears on. Yes, literally half the team is new. No answers look to be on the horizon coming out of GR. There’s cap room but does it need to be used? If you’re talking about a top 4 blue line player or a scorer that can bring the team up, absolutely. Making a deal for the sake of making a deal doesn’t make a ton of sense.
Rasmussen’s line got things going again, and Compher had a nice snipe. Everyone else is ringing the bells like Christmas morning. Shots off the pipes and crossbar every game. Bad passing and a lack of ability to open up the ice. The team has talked about it, and will continue to talk about it. What worked early on has already been spotted and sniffed out. Opposing teams know where the passes are going.
We didn’t see anything like the boost in New York. Fans have already cooled down and the crowd looked a bit like Gallagher’s hair. Pretty bare in some places. Overall, you win some you shouldn’t and you lose some you shouldn’t. Hopefully the team can bounce back into the ‘W’ column soon.
First Period Wings goals:
No first period goals
First period:
A better start, and 3 minutes in Detroit is headed to the power play. Larkin just rang the pipe. A shame, but this game may be one Detroit really needs in terms of a full effort.
Power play needs to move Larkin out of the slot. Teams are looking for it. Put him on the right side half wall with Raymond in the slot. Wings not getting clean entry, but 5 minutes in they have 4 shots. Better start for sure.
At 7:02 Habs get the scoring going as Seider fell and Newhook went around and took the puck to the net. 1-0 MTL. Shots 5-3 DET
10 seconds later Petry to the box for delay of game. Not good. Wings kill it, no shots on goal for Habs.
Shots: 12-9 MTL
Score: 1-0 MTL
Second Period Wings goals:
Fischer’s goal, almost called back
Second Period:
Wings get more power play chances and don’t score. Monhan cheated and interfered but it wasn’t caught so Montreal gets a second. Detroit challenges the goal, but not sure they can challenge the interference. Wings may have caught a break with an offside call. No goal but hopefully the refs will wake up. Still 1-0.
With 3:16 left in the 2nd Rasmussen when hard to the net and looks to have scored on the backhand. But, the puck went off of Fischer’s hand and it will probably be called back. Nope, it’s 1-1 and Detroit scores on their 20th shot. 15 shots for MTL.
With 1:32 left Detroit to the box for tripping (Larkin).
Score: 1-1
Shots: 22-16 DET
3rd period Wings goals:
Compher’s sharp angle shot to tie the game 2-2
3rd Period - MTL scored 26 seconds in on the power play.
At 6:06 Compher scored from a hard angle after Veleno got the puck out to the side of the night. Big goal to get Detroit back in. 2-2. Shots 26-19 DET
Heading to OT
Score: 2-2
Shots: 26-22 DET
Overtime:
With 1:33 left Reimer draws a penalty for holding the stick so Detroit will be short handed with 93 seconds left in the extra frame. Detroit catches a break as Suzuki hits the pipe. 1:19 left. Wings need to win a faceoff. Caufield gets the game winner for MTL.
Score: 3-2 MTL
Shots: 29- 26 DET
