Summary:

It is immensely frustrating to see Detroit “flip the switch” for about 1/3 of the game. A terrible start, 4 goals against in the second and a power play that wouldn’t work early on had Detroit in a hole 5 goals deep when the third rolled around. A spin around goal by Rasmussen, a backhander in tight by Kostin and a shot from Copp picking the corner all came after it was too late. The team had just given up too much.

Now, should 5 goals go in 26 shots (first and second period combined)? Absolutely not. Should Detroit have more than 12 shots after 2 periods? Yes, definitely. The terrible start felt salvageable after giving up 1 goal in the first, but not after 4 against in the second.

Even if Detroit had closed the gap and gotten a single point, that start feels consistent with what we’ve been seeing. There has to be a group in that room that gets the team moving. Trochek has had his way with Detroit multiple times, and his 2 goals were the difference. Husso, there is no reason for him to continue to get starts. Something has to change there. Too many times the defense was stuck behind the net (particularly on Panarin’s tally).

I have to imagine that Lidstrom has some thoughts for the blue line. Seider made some big plays and shut down a late 2 on 1. Chiarot and Gostisbehere are not defensive stalwarts. I love what Ghost can bring to the power play, but his D zone positioning and instincts aren’t his strong suit.

At least the last 15 minutes had a lot of excitement for Detroit fans, but it’s a tale of two teams (again). Completely different group when the game kicks in, the game just needs to kick in much sooner.

In 2 days Detroit will face Montreal. This is a team the squad should be able to handle. When Boston, New York, New Jersey, Florida, Toronto and Tampa come around, tonight was an example of what could well kill the post season hopes amongst the group. Someone needs to step up and figure out how to start a game.

First Period Detroit goals: no first period goals for Detroit

First Period:

Just 1:40 in Trochek walked around Fabbri and scored on NYR’s 4th shot. Husso looks bad, Fabbri showing rust. Looks like another start where Detroit wasn’t ready.

3:22 in and Detroit still doesn’t have a shot. Rangers have 8.

Wings go the the power play at 5:16. Shots 9-0 NYR. Wings only get on SOG, but some good movement. 2nd unit looks better than first.

Wings back on the power play at 12:10, shots are 12-1 NYR. Wings record 3 shots but no scoring. Shots 12-5 NYR with 5:34 left.

With 46 seconds left Sprong hit the cross bar. He’s been ringing iron like a blacksmith lately.

Shots: 13-5 NYR
Score: 1-0 NYR

Second Period Detroit goals: No Second Period Goals for DET

Second Period

Wings heading to the power play 37 seconds into the 2nd period. Rangers get a very good short handed opportunity just about 30 seconds in. Wings look very bad on this advantage, and end up icing the puck with 28 seconds left in the power play. Wings finish advantage with a single SOG, shots 13-6 NYR.

Wings send Rangers to power play at 7:19. Took 11 seconds for them to score. 2-0 NYR. Shots 17-7 with 12:29 left in 2nd. Detroit has not shown up so far. Just 16 seconds later NYR back to power play. 27 seconds in Trochek scores. 3-0 NYR. Shots 18-7. Husso should not be getting the majority of starts and this team is just embarrassing itself.

Wings finally starting to play, but it took going down 3 goals and nearly half the game. This team should feel embarrassed by the starts they consistently have.

With 8:39 left in the second Panarin was alone in front of the net and scored. Ghost and Maata were both behind the net. 4-0, shots 19-9. This after LaLonde gave a complete cope answer to Jackie Redmond (we’ve had our chances, I like our game 5 on 5.). I hope the conversation in the room has a little more reality behind it.

With 5:50 left NYR score their 5th of the game and 4th of the period. Glad the team is playing good 5 on 5 Newsie…5 goals on 21 shots, Detroit with 11 shots in 35 minutes of play.

NYR back to the power play. Shots are 22-11 with 4:40 left as Rangers continue on the advantage. Wings kill it (mercifully). Shots 24-11 NYR with 3:00 left.

2 seconds left and Detroit goes to the power play.

Score: 5-0 NYR
Shots: 26-12 NYR

3rd Period DET goals:

Rasmussen Opens Detroit scoring (5-1 NYR)

Klim’s first as a Wing (5-2 NYR)

Copp’s Tally (5-3 NYR)

3rd Period:

Detroit starting the period with about 1:58 of power play time. Not surprisingly they fail to convert. At 4:34 they get another and Perron misses a tip in and couldn’t take advantage of a wide open net with a down and out goalie. Shots are 27-14 NYR at just past the 5 minute mark. Wings will have 52 seconds of 5 on 3 due to delay of game. Again, wasted passes lead to a clear as the team goes for Larkin. Perron misses another shot opportunity. Wings back to 5 on 4. Compher rings the pipe with 13 seconds left and Quick freezes the play.

With 12:05 on their 19th shot Rasmussen spins in the faceoff circle and scores. 5-1 shots 27-20. Wings score 16 seconds later as Kostin goes hard to the net and scores on the back hand. 5-2. Shots now 27-21.

With 8:27 left Wings are now jumping and have turned it on (particularly the bottom 6). So frustrating to see two such different teams once Detroit finally gets engaged. These starts are so bad. Shots now 29-25 NYR. Mo with a solid defensive play as the clock ticks down allowing Husso to freeze the puck.

With 6:11 left Copp scores on Detroit’s 25th shot. 5-3 NYR. Shots 31-25 NYR.

Wings pull the goalie in the final 3 to see if they can close the two goal gap. With 1:48 left shots are 32 to 26 and Rangers just iced the puck. Wings run out of time.

Final: 5-3 NYR
Shots: 32-28 NYR
