Summary:
*classy moment for Adam Johnson by NYI as a horrible accident took the player at far too young an age. Hats off to the organization for the pre game tribute.

On the shot clock, and pretty much the entire second period, this was as close a game as you could get. The last ten minutes of the first saw the ice tilt for Detroit, but the second period seemed like a standoff. When the Islanders scored a short handed goal to break things open, it felt like a gut shot for the Red Wings at the end of the 2nd. Dobson’s shot was tipped in early in the third and that 2-0 lead felt insurmountable as Sorokin had the answer to every shot. Right up until Sprong made a beautiful delay/drag shot that got Detroit back in the game.

The Red Wings saw their next two shots go in and went from 2 down to up by 1. With 5 minutes left, it felt inevitable that the Islanders would tie it up as Perron headed to the box. The score went even at 3 to 3 as Horvat scored on the power play. Overtime came up quickly.

Detroit had an early look but Sorokin looked unbeatable. Then, the second line jumped on. Compher hit the crossbar, the puck was kept in the zone, Raymond passed to Compher and found an opening opposite the side that J.T. Had scored on. The return pass was tapped in and Raymond looked like a player vindicated as he celebrated.

It can’t be overstated, this game felt (to me) that the 2nd goal from New York would hold up as Sorokin just looked like he could get ahold of every shot. The win feels surreal, and much needed. That would give Detroit 13 points (6 wins and 1 OT loss) and that’s a good 10 game stretch.

The team will have a few days off and face the post season runners up in the Panthers on 11/2. We’ll see if they can come out and find success against the team that upset the East.

First Period:

Really nice poke check by Walman early on to shut down a drive by NYI. Wings not getting clean looks in the first two minutes. A rebound at 2:30 just missed for a nice chance. At the 4 minute mark shots 2-1 NYI. Wings a bit tentative but neither team looks dominant at this point.

At 7:52 Perron had a good drive at the net. No score but a good effort. Husso came up huge around the 10 min mark as NYI was buzzing. 3 or 4 big stops.

Good Wings chance at 11:59. Another at 12:43. Kostin at 13:33 but Sorokin up to the challenge. Wings are coming on and have been since about the halfway point of the first. Just need to break through.

With 2:03 left, Husso has given the team every chance to stay in this as shots are 10-10. Another big chance for Perron at 18:30. He may not have the speed skating but Perron creates opportunities incredibly well.

A last second stop by Husso (not sure if it would have counted) but the goalie gave Detroit time to get in this game. Hoping for an up tempo 2nd by the Wings.

Score: 0-0
Shots: 11-10 DET

Second Period:

The first 4:30 has been a bit of a staring contest. Chances at both ends but neither goalie has budged.

Wings get their first power play with about 7 minutes left. Wings not getting pucks on net. The scouting report is in on the power play and they need to mix it up a bit.

Clutterbuck gets a 10 minute misconduct for saying something the refs didn’t like. 37 seconds left in the power play. Larkin took a shot that stung Perron as the time ran out on the advantage.

Petry shut down an Isles rush with a lay down block and Husso freezes the puck. Still 0-0

With 2:37 left Wings back to the power play after a slash stopped Gostisbehere from ripping a shot as his composite gave out.

Of course the Isles score as Cizikas gets in short handed and goes 5 hole. Husso had been strong, that was their 24th shot, Detroit has 25. 1-0 NYI

Wings are just not getting post Sorokin or the posts.

Score: 1-0 NYI
Shots: 26-24 DET

Third Period:

Just 1:05 in Dobson let a shot go from the blue line and Husso was beaten (potentially tipped by Nelson). 2-0 NYI

With 12:05 Wings finally get on the board as Sprong has a beautiful drag/delay snap shot to be Sorokin on Detroit’s 32nd shot. 2-1 DET.

Less than 2 minutes later Walman ties it up. Just a low shot (little to no flex). 2-2.

With 8:17 left Detroit took the lead as Compher got to the “quiet spot” and wide open to tap in the go ahead goal. 3 goals on 3 shots. 3-2 DET

With 4:59 left an errant stick by Perron puts NYI on the power play. Nothing like drama to kill momentum. And of course, Horvat scores and evens it up with 4:11 to go. 3-3

That will send the teams to overtime.

Score: 3-3
Shots: 37-35 NYI

Overtime:

Debrincat had a chance but Sorokin was up to the challenge less than a minute in. Then, Raymond got the OT winner tapping in a beautiful cross seam pass from Compher after a heartbreaking shot off the cross bar by Compher looked to be on its way out of the zone. I don’t think I’ve seen Raymond celebrate that enthusiastically in over a year.

Final
Score: 4-3 Detroit
Shots: 38-37 NYI
