Summary:

There may be no worse feeling than the rush of the opposing team after you hit a goalpost. Raymond is feeling that right now. The illegal stick throw of Schwartz in the 2nd was fortunately met with a 3 goal tally that got Detroit into overtime. A bad bounce found Eberle on his knees and a game winner in the net.

Husso looked shaky at times, and needing to score 4 to stay in a game is not a good habit to make. We’re seeing more offense from Detroit than we have in a long time. Yet, on the backend it feels like almost every shot against is a dangerous one. Wins and losses are going to happen, that’s just reality. Is it fair to say that the team needs more out of Husso? Or is this just the way the year is going?

Detroit has 11 of 12 points in the past 6 games and that is a really good start. Nothing to complain about. Seattle has had horrible puck luck in their start, and tonight they came out on top. They outshot Detroit 36 to 27, and those numbers seem way off for a score of 5 to 4. Detroit scoring 4 on 27 shots and Seattle scoring 5 on 36 shots have the goalies with an 861 and an 852 save percentage, respectively.

Full marks to Seattle, they played hard. This was a team that believed the results didn’t match the effort. Detroit scored 3 power play goals and Debrincat has his 9th of the season. Veleno has 4, Larkin has 4. This has been a wild start for the Winged Wheel. A late ending, disappointing to be sure. However, a big comeback in the third that could have sent the team a sixth straight win was undone by a hooking penalty. I’m not a fan of some of the calls on the ice tonight, and that was as untimely as they come to be sure.

Let me know your thoughts. Is Husso just finding his groove, or is the defense not giving the support needed? It’s been a good roll, we’ll see if the team can bounce back against the jets.

First Period:

A lot of back and forth, Seattle looked to have the better of the chances (save a Veleno shot off the top bar and a Larkin breakaway). At 14:30, after a scrum in the corner, teams to play 4 on 4. No scoring, but with 2:53 left Detroit will go to the power play.

No goal on the advantage.

Shots: 13-12 DET
Score: 0-0

Second Period:

Veleno’s tip in goal

Just 1:07 into the second, Detroit had some good puck movement in the O zone. Sprong got a pass to Maata who had a high flex wrister to the net. Veleno tipped it in to get his 4th goal of the season, all in the past 3 games. Sprong and Veleno seem to make plays happen. 1-0 DET.

At 2:28, Detroit goes to the power play. No score.

At around the 5 minute mark Seattle goes to the powerplay and scored just seconds in. 1-1

At 12:05 Chiarot drew a minor for playing without a helmet. We all know the helmet rule, while it stinks, he needed to get someone to jump in and go to the bench. Wings manage to kill off the advantage.

With just 2:06 left Seattle takes the lead as Schwartz takes a slapshot from the half wall. 2-1 Seattle

With less than a minute left, Kartye scores on a 1 on 0 caused in part by a horrible missed call of Schwartz throwing his stick and blocking an attempt that should have led to another power play. 3-1 Seattle

Shots: 24-19 SEA
Score: 3-1 SEA

Third Period:

Gostisbehere’s power play tally

Detroit got back within 1 on a power play 2 minutes into the third. Larkin wins the draw back to Seider, perfect pass to Gostisbehere and he ripped a slapshot into the net. 3-2 SEA

Larkin’s tying power play tally

Back on the power play, Detroit ties it up. Same cast of characters, but this time Larkin scores with assists from Gostisbehere and Seider.

Debrincat’s 9th comes on the pp

At near the 7 minute mark, Seattle gets a power play attempt. With 6 seconds left on Seattle’s advantage, Walman gets a breakaway and draws a penalty. 6 seconds 4 on 4 then another Wings advantage. Debrincat cashes in and gets Detroit a one goal lead on his 9th of the year.

With just 4 minutes left, Sprong heads to the box for boarding. This is a big kill for Detroit. With 28 seconds left in the advantage Husso made a big stop, and at 2:18 Seattle calls a timeout. Seattle hasn’t pulled the goalie yet as the faceoff. The Wings kill that penalty but Larkin gets sent to the box for hooking and now Seattle has the goalie pulled and they tie it up. 4-4.

Score: 4-4
Shots: 35-28 SEA

Overtime:

With 5 seconds left in OT Seattle wins after Raymond hit a goalpost.

Score: 5-4 SEA
Shots: 36-27
