Summary:
Calgary was able to stop the hottest power play in the league, but the goals poured in regardless of that effort. Debrincat had his first hat trick as a Red Wing, Larkin with a goal and 2 assists, Raymond and Holl both collected 3 assists. 6 goals on 30 shots is absolutely baffling. Detroit had similar stats yesterday against Ottawa. This team is just racing out of the gate with 30 goals in the first 6 games.
Sprong is still an impressive pickup. He seems to create plays in every game (and yes, it’s early in the season). Debrincat is the NHL scoring leader, and the line of Raymond, Larkin and the Cat seems to just create opportunities and put the opposition on their heels.
Honestly, it’s enjoyably baffling right now. Walman’s goal off of a faceoff win by Perron, the 2 man rushes, the energy in the building and on the bench is just incredible this early in the year. For some reason, this team seems to have found something special and found it quickly.
We’re not through the first 10 game stint yet, but so far it looks pretty good for the Winged Wheel. Reimer has also had a strong couple outings in the backup role and Husso looked closer to the expected form yesterday. Let’s see what the next few contests bring.
First Period:
Debrincat’s 6th
Just two minutes into the game Detroit was able to get on the scoreboard. Larkin sped into the zone and dished the puck to Raymond. Unable to get a shot to go, the puck ended up on Holl’s stick who found Debrincat standing in front of the net. He tapped the puck in for his 6th of the year. 1-0 Detroit
Veleno’s 3rd
At 9:44 Veleno got his 3rd goal in 2 games. Holl passed the puck to Chiarot who sent a wrister toward the net and Veleno tipped the shot in just outside the slot area. 2-0 Detroit
With 6:37 left Detroit’s power play took to the ice. A couple good looks but no goal on the advantage.
With 2:17 left Detroit was right back on the advantage as Kadri went to the box for tripping. Vledar made some huge saves and kept Detroit from adding to their 2-0 lead in the dwindling minutes of the period.
Score: 2-0 DET

Second Period:
Larkin’s 3rd
Just two minutes in, Detroit was getting some good puck movement in the O zone. As Calvary looked to exit the zone, Sprong caused a turnover and sent Debrincat on a 2 on 1 toward the net with Larkin. A pass to Larkin saw the Captain pick the top corner for his 3rd of the year. Debrincat with 2nd assist. He and Larkin both have 10 points now.
With 7:48 left in the first, a net front scrum turned into Calgary’s first of the night as Mangiapane found a wide open net and tapped the puck in. 3-1 DET
Debrincat’s 2nd of the night
just over a minute later the Wings struck back and regained the three goal lead as Raymond got the puck to Larkin who found Debrincat and the first year Wing got his 2nd of the night and 7th on the year. 11 points apiece for Larkin and Debrincat. 4-1 DET
with 1:26 the flames struck again as a knuckler from Sharagovich made it cleanly past Reimer. 4-2 DET
Score: 4-2
Shots: 22-19
Third Period:
Walman’s first of the year
At 3:07 Perron took a faceoff in the Ozone after Veleno was waived out. The puck went to Sprong who went it back to Walman. Walman ripped a shot on net and got his first on the year. 5-2 DET
Debrincats hat trick goal
37 seconds later at 3:44 Debrincat got his 3rd of the night after taking a pass from Raymond out of the Dzone. Raymond’s 3rd assist on the night 6-2 Detroit. Holl with the other assist
Calgary went to the power play around the 8 minute mark. 40 seconds in Reimer tripped a player and the flames have a 2 man advantage. At 9:05 it looks like Calgary scores, but potential goalie interference is being looked at. Confirmed, no goal after Kadri had knocked Reimer over. Still 6-2 Detroit.
The Wings kill off the 5 on 3, 44 seconds of regular power play left for the flames. Wings kill off remaining advantage and Reimer stops play after an even strength attempt.
With 7:20 left Debrincat drew a hooking penalty and the power play gets another shot. All goals even strength so far tonight. Unable to convert on the advantage. 5 minutes left in the game. Still 6-2
With 3:12 left Detroit back to the power play after a trip that sent Lindholm to the box.
Unable to convert, but Detroit back to the power play with 42 seconds left.
