Bednar started the game in net and for just over 32 minutes of play (1st and just over half of the second) held a shutout stopping 30 shots. Cossa returned to the net and served up another horrible outing allowing 6 goals, 2 in his first minute of play. Cossa could well be a healthy scratch, in Toledo.
Yes, the tournaments are about getting reps and experience. However, if there was ever a time to allow a goalie to finish a game in this format today was the day. Bednar must have Yzerman humming “You’re my greatest mistake” as he looks at former first round pick Cossa.
There were some highlights, as Hanas played strong, adding another pair of goals and getting some time on special teams. His effort killed off a third period Toronto power play and just minutes later he scored as Detroit had the man advantage.
If this was purely a scouting event, Cossa would have made the list for all the wrong reasons. He gave up 5 goals in his last outing and 6 in this outing. That is a near untenable situation for Wings players. At this point, Cossa can probably expect a phone call that may not be very pleasant.
Give credit to Toronto, as soon as Cossa came in they turned up the heat knowing that his presence had tilted the ice in their favor. The issues that the netminder faced and bought him a ticket to Toledo may send him there yet again.
Still no opportunity to see Mazur, Hanas has had some good moments. Tuomisto and Soderblom (as has been rightly stated) also had good moments but this is their third outing. It was “noted” that Seider wasn’t at this tournament by the broadcast. I’m not sure why you would bring that up. There is zero benefit to putting him into the fray and risking injury before camp.
Holmstrom did an ad for Detroit’s overseas games in Sweden (not sure how many people are lining up to buy tickets to fly over and watch) but it was a good reminder. I’m not sure Detroit has had a tougher net front presence than Homer. His knees are virtually bare of cartilage but after every slash and cross check he would get back up. Any perspective net front player should spend some time with the retired Swede as he famously called incoming talent “soft” after he’d retired.
Detroit goes 0-3 in the tournament, but more than that a lot of bad looks for Cossa do not bode well with leadership or the fan base. If this were the “trial”, Bednar just pushed Cossa down the on the depth chart. I doubt it will be said player to player, but a solid outing completely undone in embarrassing fashion won’t go unnoticed in the room.
First Period:
Opening Line: Soderblom, Kasper, Sawchuk, Wallinder, Gibson, Bednar in net
Sima Goal
At 9:07 Sima intercepted a pass in the O zone, skated in and scored 5 hole. 1-0 DET. Very quick transition in a period that the Leafs have looked like the faster team. Wings found some life but are down to 11 forwards as Daniels is out (could be precautionary after a late block in the last game) and have dressed 7 defensemen.
At 11:20, Wings hit the power play just as they are starting to come together. A good reminder that any players drafted and are in the NCAA or playing in Europe can’t be at camp as seasons have started or in the NCAA case rules prohibit participation.
Wings fail to convert on power play, not an overwhelming amount of opportunities for the team.
First period ends 1-0 DET Shots 15 TOR - 14 DET
*Bednar looked good in net, seems dialed in
2nd Period
Hanas power play goal.
No scoring, Wings get 2nd power play chance at 5:04. With just six seconds left in the advantage (6:59) Hanas scored the 2nd tally of the game. For the first half of the advantage Toronto held strong, for the final 30 seconds Detroit had begun a good cycle play that ended with the tally.
At 12:24 Bednar left the crease and Cossa entered. Bednar played a solid game stopping 30 of 30, hoping Cossa can level up.
No such luck as Cossa gives up a goal within about 2 minutes. This may have been a good game to give up on the goalie change.
Score now tied as Leafs score again at 14:59. Cossa has given up 2 goals on about 3 shots. That is pathetic after watching Bednar play. Goals were 56 seconds apart.
Lombardi goal
Wings regain lead as Lombardi cashes in on a rebound from a Hanas shot. 3-2 DET.
Period ends 3DET - 2TOR shots: 36 TOR - 27 DET (Cossa only faced 6 and gave up 2. Hope he still has a place in Toledo)
3rd Period
Toronto tied the game less than a minute in. This is embarrassing. Less than a minute later Toronto takes the lead. 4-3. Cossa should be pulled. Gave up 3 goals on 8 shots today so far.
Leafs get their first power play around the six minute mark. Wings had a wide open net and failed to capitalize on a short handed opportunity. Leafs score again with 35 seconds left in power play. Leafs up 5-3.
Leafs back on power play at 9:01. Mastrisomone taking some punishment from his old ‘mates.
Leafs don’t convert (more due to the play of Hanas than Cossa). Wings now heading to the power play at 11:19.
Link verbiage
Wings score as Hanas tipped a shot from Tuomisto. 5-4 Toronto. Hanas has 4 goals in 2 games and was really good on the 2nd PK. Sawchuk w/2nd assist.
Link verbiage
With just 2:07 left as Cossa was skating to the bench Soderblom tied it up 5-5.
With 34.8 seconds left Leafs regain the lead (6-5). Cossa is just horrible right now.
Wings get power play with 18.5 seconds left. Toronto kills the penalty and Cossa killed Bednar’s outing.
