I understand that it’s difficult to get a team together for the first time and jump right in. However, Dallas seems to have a system that has players prepared (in season as well) to start the game. So many times in the rebuild it has felt like a sluggish start took Detroit far too long to shake off. This was no exception.
Just after the goalie switch in the second (as Dallas scored quickly on the fresh netminder) the team started to get it together. The failed conversions on a 5 on 3 and several point blank attempts felt like a bit more of the same. Amongst the positives were Soderblom and Tuomisto at times. Both looked like they were engaging and both netted tallies for their team. Dallas was able to do what that team historically has done. Make it hard to skate and find a lane.
I’ll hold back some criticism for the second outing. I fully expect some of the veterans to look in the mirror and put it on their shoulders for a better 60 minute effort. Regardless, the first look at this team wasn’t overwhelmingly pleasant.
First Period review:
2-1 Stars. Wings failed to convert on a 5 on 3 advantage and Dallas tied the score 1-1 right as the team returned to full strength. A second goal in short succession seemed to make Detroit look like far too much like the rebuild counterpart. Completely unprepared for this game with a glaring lack of scoring ability and having drawn the short straw in the battle of the goalies. Soderblom with Detroit’s lone goal.
Second Period review:
After the goalie switch, Stars score again (3-1). With 6:15 left Soderblom got clipped and drew a 5 minute major while Wings were short handed. After 4 on 4 finishes 3:10 of power play for Detroit. To be honest, this Wings team looks completely out of sync. After some sustained cycling Wings finally broke through. 3-2 with 1:19 left in power play and 3:34 in the period. Looks like Tuomisto with the goal. For the final minute Detroit really looked like they were coming together. A one goal game faces the prospects as they enter the third period.
Third Period Review:
A lot of back and forth hockey. Detroit pulled the goalie and at 1:11 Dallas scored an empty net from center ice for the final tally. 4-2 Dallas.
