Quick Hits: September 8, 2023
1) Flyers Daily: On Friday's edition of Flyers Daily, Jason Myrtetus discusses the importance of the continued evolution of the Flyers' roster nucleus, not only in taking the next step in 2023-24 from last season but also for the long term future. 2) Coming today in PhiladelphiaFlyers.com: an in-depth analysis of the Morgan Frost contract and a look back at the progression of his 2022-23 season. The article will post this morning.
3) Registration is now open for the Philadelphia Flyers Learn to Play Rookie Program. The Flyers work in tandem with 15 local ice rinks to provide boys and girls, ages 5-9, the opportunity to have access to the sport and top-caliber instruction at a low price ($250 for six weeks) compared to other hockey programs.
The registration fee includes six weeks of hockey instruction, appearances from Riley Cote and other Flyers Alumni, and a full set of head-to-toe equipment for each participant. Since its launch in 2016, the Flyers Rookie Program has introduced hockey to nearly 6,000 children. For more information and online registration,

4) Tickets are now on sale the second annual Flyers Charities Casino Night on Nov. 16 at Vie in Center City (600 N. Broad St.). Last year's event generated strong feedback from attendees and was particularly popular among the Flyers' players themselves. All players and most segments of the organization, including broadcasters and management, attended the inaugural event last year at Rivers Casino. Steve Coates served as the emcee at the first event and will reprise his role this November.
"I have this circled on my calendar and it's one I'm really looking forward to. This event connects our players and the fans outside of the typical rink atmosphere, and you can really see the difference it makes. It was evident that everyone who came out last year had a great time and there are even better prizes to be won this year," said Flyers president of hockey operations Keith Jones in an organizational press release.
I can vouch firsthand that it was a great time, and I'm someone who doesn't particularly enjoy gambling games. I gave my chips away but spent the night chatting with attending Flyers Alumni, broadcasters Jim Jackson and Tim Saunders, PA announcer Lou Nolan and longtime Flyers publicist Joe Kadlec, among others. It was a very relaxed, and fun atmosphere. With his famously competitive intensity, however, Flyers Hall of Famer Joe Watson was trying to win an autographed Pele soccer jersey in the silent auction. Joe kept circling back to the auction table to check on the bidding status.
VIP and general admission tickets are available. Attendees must be 21 years of age or older. For more information,

7) Today in Flyers History: September 8
* 1971: The Flyers sell the contract of the late Cliff Schmautz to the Portland Buckaroos of the minor league WHL (Western Hockey League). The transaction was done as a favor to Schmautz by general manager Keith Allen, as Schmautz lived in Portland (from the mid 1960s until his passing in 2002) and asked Allen if he could go back home to rejoin the Buckaroos.
* 1989: The Flyers trade backup goaltender Mark "Trees" Laforest to the Toronto Maple Leafs for a 1991 fifth-round pick (Yanick Degrace) and a 1991 seventh-round pick (Andrei Lomakin) that originally belonged to Philadelphia.
