Pierre-Luc Dubois Not Interested in Extension with Jets

As reported by TSN and The Athletic's Pierre LeBrun, Pierre-Luc Dubois is not interested in an extension with the Winnipeg Jets, whether it be a long-term deal or a one-year deal bringing him to unrestricted free agency.

Dubois' agent Pat Brisson has been making sure that the Dubois contract situation isn't being dealt with quietly, whether that be for the better or worse for his client. In 2022, Brisson mentioned that Dubois would like to play in Montreal "someday", and since then, the conversations about how he is forcing his way there have not taken a rest.

Today, LeBrun reports that his understanding from Brisson is that a deal is not going to be done with him, Dubois and the Jets. What makes trading Dubois difficult is that most teams that will pony up and try and acquire a 25 year old player that has worked his way out of one organization already, will not be offering a deal up to snuff for Kevin Cheveldayoff.

Cheveldayoff is not known for getting fleeced or making poor trades. He will likely hold him ground and get as close to fair value for Dubois as possible. With recent reports coming out that the Jets are not interested in a rebuild, rather looking for immediate lineup help for a re-tool, it makes the playing field even more interesting for a potential deal.

Montreal is the obvious match for a trade, but given where both teams are, and want to be, a deal may be difficult to work out for the two sides. They are of course interested, but the last I heard was that the two sides have not engaged in serious talks about moving Dubois to his home province team, though as I mentioned earlier today, that can change in a heartbeat.

There is of course more than just one team interested in Dubois, and he or Brisson have never stated that Montreal is their only option, so there is certainly a deal to work out.

The Alex DeBrincat situation in Ottawa is a few steps ahead, as it has been reported that DeBrincat and his agent have given the Senators a list of ten teams he would be interested in moving to. Expect the same to happen with Dubois and the Jets will have their options. With the team expected to explore moving on from Blake Wheeler, Mark Scheifele and Connor Hellebuyck as well, it is looking more and more like Dubois may be the first domino to fall.

If they act quick enough, there is enough time between now and the draft to have some extra assets on the floor at the end of the month, and though they have expressed more interest in a re-tool, draft picks are always valuable and if that is the best package you can get, you work with it.
