Last night’s matchup between the New Jersey Devils and Toronto Maple Leafs was as advertised. It had great goaltending, speed, and skill throughout the game. And the Devils proved that they can hang with one of the league’s best players and teams.
Musings And Thoughts
1. The Devils are streaking with eleven straight victories since losing to the Washington Capitals 6-3 on October 24th. They have outscored their opponents 46-21 during this 11 game stretch. New Jersey is averaging a little over 4 goals scored per game while giving up a little under 2 goals per game.
2. Driving to the net! Whether it was Jack Hughes or Nathan Bastian, New Jersey went hard to the net all night and Maple Leafs goalie Matt Murray had to make some spectacular saves to keep his team in it. If it weren’t for Murray, this game could have been a blow out.
3. The theme of this season thus far: When Nico Hischier scores, Devils win. But, one of the biggest plays was in overtime when Hischier won the faceoff to give the Devils possession. Toronto barely had possession in overtime and when they did, Jack Hughes was able to intercept the pass that would lead to the game winning goal by Yegor Sharangovich.
4. Devils had five penalties and were able to kill off four of them. Michael McLeod’s delay of game penalty was an unfortunate unforced error that could have cost the Devils the game. However, his teammates were able to bail him out and the Devils dodged a bullet in the third period.
