The Carolina Hurricanes announced yesterday that they’ve signed defenseman Calvin de Haan to a one-year contract, worth $850,000.

De Haan is 31 years old and spent last season playing with the Chicago Blackhawks. He was taking part in Carolina’s training camp and preseason while on a professional tryout.

With the contract, it’s likely we see de Haan used as a spare defenseman on the roster who could possibly earn bottom-pairing minutes. Carolina’s top-four group is certainly set, but de Haan can battle with the likes of Ethan Bear and Dylan Coghlan for a larger role. At under $1 million on a one-year deal, de Haan is a solid addition for the Hurricanes.
