The NHL Draft is tomorrow and the NHL press have converged into Montreal with some having travel issues. But the New Jersey Devils will be ready to better their future with their 2nd overall pick…for now.
Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald has scheduled a press conference at 5:35pm ET. Most likely, this will be about Kate Madigan promoted as Assistant General Manager of the New Jersey Devils. She is the first woman assistant GM in franchise history and the sixth in NHL history. Congratulations to Kate and hopefully she can help the Devils win a Cup!
Alex Debrincat?
The rumors have been heating up this past week. If you were Tom Fitzgerald, who would you make a deal with? All depends upon the asking price.
Let’s start with Debrincat. He has two years left on his contract and a proven 40 goal scorer. He is 24 years old with one more year on his contract at $6.4M before becoming a RFA. Would you dangle the second overall pick to get him?
According to Elliotte Friedman on his 32 Thoughts podcast, his source said the Philadelphia Flyers would not consider their 5th overall pick in this year’s draft. And Fitzgerald should not use his second overall either. Debrincat would be great addition but his presence alone would not make the Devils an immediate playoff contender. The Devils have to address other needs such as their goalie situation, third line, along with special teams. They also are searching for two assistant coaches to fill the vacated position that was once held by Mark Recchi and Alain Nasreddine. I am surprised that they have not already announced any hirings as of yet.
