Montreal Hockey Now reports today that there has been consistent interest in the Canadiens’ centerman Christian Dvorak since the trade deadline and that it’s been picking up of late especially from Western conference teams. Like most in the Habs line-up last season, Dvorak had a tough start, but his performance improved once Martin St-Louis was brought on. In the end, he finished the season with 33 points, 2 more than in his previous year while taking part in 56 games in both seasons. In his most productive campaign, he notched 38 points in 2019-2020. Under St-Louis, he produced to a 58 points rate per season and that might have help raise his stock.

Dvorak is currently in the 4th year of a 6-year deal that has a $4.5 M cap hit and starting from the season 2023-2024, he will have a modified no trade clause. Some may see the Dvorak chatter has a sign that the Canadiens are getting ready to draft Shane Wright come Thursday night, but I think that’s an oversimplification. If the Canadiens do pick Wright, there’s nothing to say that he should be making the jump in the NHL right away and if he does, he’ll have a lot to learn and shouldn’t be thrown to the wolves in the too big a role right away. Down the middle, the Habs have Suzuki, Dvorak, Evans and Poehling and you do need some veterans to teach your rookies.

This is not the first and definitely not the last rumor about the Canadiens will be hearing in the run up to the draft, but I must confess that I’m looking forward to having something concrete to report, real movement and indication of the path forward.
