Quick Hits: June 21, 2022

1) Flyers general manager and president of hockey operations Chuck Fletcher is host Jason Myrtetus' guest on the current edition of the Flyers Daily podcast. Fletcher discussed the hiring of John Tortorella as the team's new head coach. He also discussed the prospects of doing some roster reshaping this summer and what he considers the organization's top priorities. To listen, click here.

2) John Tortorella will be doing an informal meet-and-greet with members of the local media on Tuesday afternoon at the Flyers Training Center in Voorhees. This will not be a press conference, as there was a 50-minute Zoom presser on Friday. It's simply a chance for the new head coach to put faces to names and chat off-the-record. I wish I could be there today, but am still in Texas until coming back up for Draft-related coverage and the summer Development Camp.

3) HockeyBuzz's Winnipeg Jets blogger, Jacob Billington, organized a mock draft among the site's team bloggers. As with the real draft, I had the fifth pick representing the Flyers. In part of the series, Jacob assembled picks No. 1 to 16. To read the blog, click here.

4) One day after undergoing emergency gallbladder surgery, Brad Marsh was discharged from the hospital and was up and about tending to his work as Flyers Alumni president and the Flyers director of community develop. That isn't a surprise to anyone who knows Marshy. Glad he's making a speedy recovery.

5) Today in Flyers History: Flyers Select York at 2019 Entry Draft

The first round of the 2019 NHL Entry Draft took place at Rogers Arena in Vancouver on June 21, 2019. The Flyers originally held the 11th overall selection. On the floor on Draft night, however, Philadelphia swapped first-round picks with the Arizona Coyotes. The Flyers moved down to the 14th pick and acquired a second-round (45th overall) selection in the exchange.

With the 14th overall pick, the Flyers selected University of Michigan bound USNTDP defenseman Cam York. One selection later, the Montreal Canadiens picked USNTDP sniper Cole Caufield, who was headed for the University of Wisconsin. Overall, seven NTDP players were selected in the first round and 17 draftees in all had National Team Development Program experience.

On Day two of the Draft, the Flyers traded up to the third pick of the second round (34th overall) and selected Sioux City Musketeers (USHL) right winger Bobby Brink, who was committed to attend the Unversity of Denver. The Flyers flipped the 45th overall pick and a third-round selection (65th overall) to obtain the pick used on Brink.

6) Today on the Flyers' official website, I have an article about the Flyers Alumni Association reaching the $1 million direct donation milestone in their pledge to donate at least $2 million to the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation.

Additionally, the Philadelphia Flyers organization itself has contributed about $2 million to Snider Hockey from the time of its foundation in 2005. In 2022, the organization has given $300,000, on top of an initial $100,000 from 2021, towards the Scanlon Rink Project.

Snider Hockey, with support from Flyers Charities and the City of Philadelphia, will construct a multipurpose outdoor street hockey rink at the Joseph Scanlon Recreation Center in the Kensington neighborhood of Philadelphia. As part of the project the existing playground will also be refurbished, a new all-purpose sports wall will be added, and new security features will be installed.
