I apologize for missing the Wings vs Penguins shootout win. It was a depth scoring affair as Givani Smith (3) and Filip Zadina (5) tallied during regulation. Good to see Zadina get on the board, Veleno picked up his 2nd assist of the season.
Smith’s goal was right in his wheelhouse. Set up shop in front of the net, look for passes and rebounds. Zadina stayed at the side of the net on the power play and redirected a puck pass the goaltender. Obviously a guy who expects a lot more of himself, good to see him get rewarded. Raymond ended up with a nice 5 hole shootout tally.

Wings can’t outscore ‘Hawks
Game summary - Toronto has more scoring talent, it’s not a question. They’re also under tremendous pressure ever since drafting Matthews. But, Detroit rolled over and embarrassed themselves tonight.
The reality of the rebuild stands out more than ever when you look at the come back that Leafs Nation was able to grab. Even as such, success for each club will ultimately be judged differently this year. Toronto hasn’t gotten out of round 1 of the playoffs as a cap team. Detroit needs to score more goals and allow fewer. Very different levels of pressure, indeed.
To their credit, Bertuzzi and Larkin continue to climb the ranks and, along with Raymond have better than a goal per game. Huge improvement. Seider continues to find his way on the score sheet. Another 2 point night has the rookie defenseman knocking on the door of 30 points.
Enjoy the good, but let’s be in a hurry to sweep January away. The rest of the season is going to see teams hungry to grab their playoff spot. It could be a rough ride.
First Period Red Wings’ goals:
Namestnikov with a nice feed to Larkin who outskated the Leaf’s defense and got his 21st of the season on former teammate Mrazek.
Second Period Red Wings’ goals:
Namestnikov got some quick payback as he cashed in on a Larkin (and Seider) assisted tally. Seider picked off a pass and got the ball rolling on this one. :
Not to beat a dead horse, but Seider can really show poise with the puck at times. His skating and puck handling set up a beautiful pass to Bertuzzi who continues to keep pace with Larkin for his 21st:
Third Period Red Wings’ goals:
Larkin keeps climbing. He grabs # 22 as Fabbri finds him wide open.
