If you missed it, I did a write up on Lucas Raymond. Detroit did a “waiting in the Wings” video and the right shot winger certainly has a few people watching.

This is my third installment in the “getting drafty” series. The links to my first two are here:

I examined Detroit’s past drafts, from 2002 - 2012.

And so, we turn to Yzerman’s first chance at bat for Detroit. The 2019 draft had every bit of the drama you would want for “The Captain” coming home. Detroit’s draft picks all wore the number 19, and the forever gif of Mo Seider’s reaction. Yzerman literally caused people to gasp. It doesn’t get much better than that.

Since it’s so early in the development, I’m going to go ahead and list all of the picks. It’s a boost to have Seider doing so well and ready to take a crack at Detroit’s roster. Only one other player, Albert Johansson, has signed his ELC but will be playing overseas. Kirill Tyutyayev, while not having signed his ELC, is slated to play for Grand Rapids this season.

Except for the standout in Seider, this is still very early in development. Soderblom is probably the better known name from this draft. Apart from his highlight goals at the WJC, Elmer had a rough season moving up to the men’s league. You can take a look at how everyone’s doing below. This being year 3, we should start to get a feel for who is going to start standing out in their development.

Moritz Seider it’s almost easy to forget that the 6th overall pick in 2019 already has 49 games in the AHL where he had 2 goals and 20 assists. Last season he had 7 goals and 21 assists in 41 games in Sweden. Received the “Elite Prospect” award, as well as defenseman of the year. He’s only 20, but has made a name for himself. By all indications he’ll be suiting up for Detroit on opening night. The 6’3” right shot defenseman certainly seems to be ready to carve out a spot on the roster. Currently on his ELC

Antti Tuomisto was Yzerman’s second pick at 35th overall. Listed at 6’4”, another right shot defenseman, it was clear that the GM is trying to get size on the blue line. He spent last season at the University of Denver (that program is getting loaded up with Wings players) and had 2 goals and 9 assists. In his draft year, he played for Finland’s under 20 program. He had 15 goals and 34 assists (49 points) in 48 games. He has a big shot, we’ll see if his next season will see more offense. Currently Unsigned

Robert Mastrosimone was picked 54th overall, Yzerman’s third prospect. The 5’10” winger is thought to be “fearless” in his play on ice. Currently unsigned, he’s playing for Boston University. His first season saw him collect 7 goals and 10 assists in 34 games. In the past season (shortened) he grabbed 3 goals and 5 assists in 15 games.

Albert Johansson was picked at 60th overall, and his play has earned him an entry level deal. Yzerman recently signed the 6’ left shot defenseman, before sending him back over to the SHL. He had 8 goals and 11 assists in 44 games last season. With the signing, it’s possible we could see him at the end of the year (depending on how long his team plays). I would expect him in North America next season.

Albin Grewe was selected in the third round at 66th overall. 6’0” left shot winger is unsigned and played 39 games in the SHL last year (3g 3a) and 11 games in Grand Rapids (2 assists). He will play in Liiga this coming season

Ethan Phillips was selected 97th overall. Listed at 5’9”, the right shot winger is playing for Boston University. His first season saw 2 goals and 8 assists in 31 games. Last season he only played 1 game (injury). He certainly hopes to get back on the ice after a long recovery.

Cooper Moore was selected in the 5th round, 128th overall. 6’1” left shot defenseman is unsigned, and played his first season for the University of North Dakota last year. He scored 2 goals and 3 assists in 18 games.

Elmer Soderblom was selected in the 6th round, 159th overall. The 6’8” left shot winger had a notable performance WJC performance with a couple between the leg shots for the highlight reel. His draft year saw him light up the J20 super elit with 29 goals and 26 assists (55 pts) in 36 games. Unfortunately, last year saw a rough patch as he moved to the Men’s league scoring just 3 goals and 2 assists in 28 games. It would be fantastic to see him find his scoring at the higher levels this season. Currently unsigned.

Gustav Berglund was picked in the 6th round, 177 overall. 6’2” right shot defenseman (#3 for anyone counting) is unsigned and slated to play in Sweden. He accumulated 5 assists in 31 games for Vasteras IK last year.

Kirill Tyutyayev was picked in the 7th round at 190. At 5’9, he’s listed as a left shot winger or center. He picked up 11 goals and 21 assists (32 points) in 43 games in Belarus last season. He is slated to play in Grand Rapids this season, currently unsigned. Likely playing on an AHL deal.

Carter Gylander was the lone goalie selected in 2019. Grabbed in the 7th round at #191, he’s also Detroit’s final pick for that inaugural Yzer-draft. Listed at 6’5”, Gylander played 19 games at Colgate University last season posting a 6-9-4 record with 2.69 GAA and .901 SV%. Unsigned.

Adam Erne’s new deal.

Take a look at part 2 of my series on Detroit’s drafts 2013-2018

I examined Detroit’s past drafts, from 2002 - 2012.

Svechnikov has been linked to the jets,

Carter Mazur’s “Coffee with Carley”

Vrana’s press conference

Vrana has a new three year deal with Detroit

Yesterday, I wrote about the gap between Detroit and Vrana.

Detroit still doesn’t have a top 6 right shot forward.

The second line continues to inch toward improving.

I have high (possibly too high) hopes for the top line this year.

The Griffins are worth the drive, at least I think so.

My third “looking forward” looked at Pius Suter.

My second “looking forward” focused on Alex Nedeljkovic.

My first “looking forward” talked about Moritz Seider.

Jakub Vrana and Adam Erne have filed for arbitration.

I posted “The Winged Wheel season 3, ep 1”

I posted Yzerman’s Zoom call

I posted Pius Suter’s Zoom call

I did a wrap up of the “Frenzy”.
