The Ottawa Senators’ Canadian contingent emerged victorious at the IIHF World Championship today. Connor Brown, Nick Paul, and Jacob Bernard-Docker, in addition to a number of off-ice personnel, all took home Gold in a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory over Finland.

After starting the tournament with three consecutive losses, Team Canada went on a crazy run to capture Gold. Connor Brown, in particular, is a major reason that the Canadians were able to stand atop the podium when all was said and done. Much as he did for the Senators all season long, Brown contributed tangible, timely offence for this Canadian team with regularity. His contributions were so regular, in fact, that he led the tournament in scoring.

Of course, Brown’s most notable contribution in this tournament was his assist on Nick Paul’s overtime winner. The golden goal came off a slick back-and-forth passing play on a two-on-one rush; the familiarity that Brown and Paul have as Senators teammates most definitely helped them connect on the play:

Between his performance with the Senators during the regular season, and his play at this World Championship, it certainly feels like Brown has discovered another gear in his offensive game. If that’s true moving forward, it will be a huge boon to Ottawa’s chances of becoming a more competitive hockey club. With his reasonable contract and glove-like fit in the middle of DJ Smith’s lineup, Brown is as important as any “supporting” piece can possibly be.

As crazy as his offensive totals in the World Championship might have been, the *craziest* part of Brown’s time over there was the fact that he *wasn't* named tournament MVP. Someone explain how the player who led the tournament in scoring and assisted on the golden goal isn’t most valuable. I’ll wait.

As always, thanks for reading.
