Bloodletting at MSG: Davidson/Gorton gone, Drury promoted

Just when we thought the Rangers were the stable organization at MSG, along came Wednesday. In what can only be described as extremely shocking turn of events, owner James Dolan fired President John Davidson and GM Jeff Gorton. Chris Drury has been named as the acting President and GM, though without the interim title.

I will have a lot more on this in the upcoming days, but wanted to get a new blog up. After Monday's game, Wednesday's contest was circled on the calendar due to Tom Wilson's actions Monday and the league's inaction Tuesday. That inaction resulted in a strongly word tweet from the Rangers, decrying the league's response where only a $5000 fine was issued.

Wacky Wednesday is an apt description, especially when you consider the comments by Mark Messier on the Michael Kay on Wednesday, where he in essence called the Rangers soft and questioned how the team was constructed. This echoes what Larry Brooks wrote but doesn't explain the timing of the firing, but may give insight into the decision. The driver seems to be the "slow" pace of making the playoffs, which is in direct contrast to the rebuild letter that James Dolan signed.

This is what Elliotte Friedman wrote today, if you want even more reasons to shake your head.
“But, according to multiple sources, it wasn’t moving quick enough for ownership. Dolan generally leaves the Rangers alone, but if you’re a Knicks fan, you’re familiar with his impulsiveness. He’s not known for patience. Apparently, Dolan also expressed frustration that he didn’t receive enough communication on the plan.”

Today's events are evidence that the Rangers today look like the Knicks of year's past. Those of us in New York, know how bad this is. A dark day at MSG putting the bright future clearly at risk.
