The win marked the team’s second straight shutout victory over the Rangers and 10th shutout of the season overall, which leads the league. The playoff berth also marks the third season in a row where the Islanders have reached the playoffs, the first time they’ve had three straight seasons in the playoffs since the early 2000s.
It’s still undetermined as to who the Islanders will face in the playoffs, as it could still really be any of the Boston Bruins, Pittsburgh Penguins or Washington Capitals. New York has had much more success against the Bruins this season than the Penguins or Capitals, with their record against each team being: 5-2-0 vs. Boston, 2-4-2 vs. Pittsburgh, and 2-5-1 vs. Washington.
That said, the Islanders do have a favourable schedule for their last five games, as they fight for seeding. They’ll face the Buffalo Sabres and New Jersey Devils twice each, before a meeting with the Boston Bruins in their final game of the regular season.
