As revealed by Dominique Ducharme in his post game media availability, Brendan Gallagher has a broken thumb on his right hand. There were no updates on that front today, aside from the fact that it is still unknown whether or not he will need an operation and that he will need to meet with a specialist.
Should he require an operation and be out until the end of the season, this could be an opportunity for Marc Bergevin to use the long-term injury reverse list. By putting Gallagher on there, he could create some cap space for himself and go hunting for a much-needed puck moving defenseman.
As I’ve said in my March 28th blog, I’d like to see the Habs pursue Vince Dunn from the Blues and since they are having a lot of trouble right now and are currently out of the playoffs picture, they might be willing to deal him.
Meanwhile, according to this morning’s practice, Kotkaniemi will be moved to the right wing and complete the first line alongside Tatar and Danault. I’ve said before that I’d rather not see the young centres be moved out of position, however, following Staal’s insertion in the line-up, KK found himself on the 4th line and spent much of the 3rd period on the bench yesterday.
Filling in for Gallagher will allow him to get a lot more ice-time and play with much more gifted players. After practice, Kotkaniemi spoke to the media and stated that it would be an honour for him to play alongside Tatar and Danault and that he had played right wing in Finland in the past. He added that he preferred the right to the left wing. Looks like he’s fully on board and ready to contribute wherever he’s required to.
Last night, Ducharme also said that Carey Price was being evaluated for a possible injury but that it was nothing too serious. Today however, the Canadiens announced that Cayden Primeau had been recalled to the taxi squad and that Price would not be making the trip to Toronto. Price will apparently stay in town to receive treatments.
Post practice, Ducharme said that it was an issue that had been nagging Price for a while and that it was too early to tell if he’d be able to play Thursday against Winnipeg, later admitting that it was possible that Allen would play both games.
Unlike in the past years, this is not a dramatic news for the Canadiens. This time, the back-up isn’t Mike Condon, Dustin Tokarski or Keith Kinkaid, it’s Jake Allen who has proven himself to be more than capable to fill in for Price. Right now, the back-up has got the better numbers in the goal against average and save percentage categories.
Of course, should Price be out for a significant period, it could become an issue. Charlie Lindgren has been riding the taxi squad since the start of the season and according to the league rules, the Habs had to recall a goaltender to put on there while Lindgren will back-up Allen tomorrow night.
In better news, the Habs signed Jan Mysak to a 3-year entry level contract which will kick in next season. Since he’s a CHL player, Mysak won’t be eligible to play in the AHL next year at 19 years old, so if he doesn’t make the Canadiens out of camp, they’ll be able to send him down to his junior club and that contract will slide to the following year.
As for Cole Caufield, he practiced with the Rocket for the first time this morning and Joel Bouchard has confirmed that he should play his first game against the Marlies on Friday. Thankfully, the Canadiens do not play Friday and RDS will be broadcasting the AHL game, so make sure to tune in to see what Caufield can do at the professional level.

Il n’y a pas eu de mise à jour sur son état si ce n’est que pour dire qu’on ne sait toujours pas si la blessure nécessitera une opération, il devra rencontrer un spécialiste pour être fixé.
Si une opération s’avérait nécessaire et que Gallagher devait s’absenter jusqu’à la fin de la saison, il pourrait s’agir d’une opportunité pour Marc Bergevin d’utiliser la liste des blessés à long terme. En y inscrivant le nom de Gallagher, il pourrait se créer de la place sur la masse salariale et aller à la chasse au défenseur mobile.
Comme je l’avais dit dans mon blogue de 28 mars dernier, j’aimerais bien voir le CH tenter d’acquérir Vince Dunn des Blues et comme ils sont présentement hors du portrait des séries éliminatoires, ils pourraient vouloir l’échanger.
Pendant ce temps, si on se base sur l’entraînement matinal, Kotkaniemi sera déplacé à l’aile droite afin de combler l’absence de Gallagher aux côtés de Tatar et Danault sur le premier trio. J’ai déjà mentionné que je préfèrerais ne pas voir les jeunes centres être mutés à l’aile, toutefois, après l’insertion de Staal dans l’alignement, KK s’est retrouvé sur la 4e ligne et a passé la majorité de la 3e période au banc.
Remplacer Gallagher lui permettra d’avoir beaucoup plus de temps de glace et de jouer avec des joueurs plus talentueux. Après la pratique, Kotkaniemi a parlé aux médias et a dit que ce serait un honneur pour lui de jouer avec Tatar et Danault et qu’il avait déjà joué à l’aile droite en Finlande. Il a également ajouté qu’il préférait évoluer à l’aile droite qu’à l’aile gauche. Il semble être d’accord avec le plan et prêt à contribuer ou son apport sera nécessaire.
Hier soir, Ducharme avait également dit que l’état de Carey Price était en cours d’évaluation pour une blessure possible mais qu’il ne croyait pas que ce soit sérieux. Aujourd’hui toutefois, les Canadiens ont rappelé Cayden Primeau pour l’assigner à l’escouade de réserve et que Price ne serait pas du voyage à Toronto. Le gardien numéro 1 du CH restera donc en ville afin de recevoir des traitements.
Après l’entraînement, Ducharme a mentionné qu’il s’agissait d’une blessure qui incommodait Price depuis un certain temps et qu’il était trop tôt pour dire s’il pourrait jouer jeudi contre Winnipeg, admettant un peu plus tard qu’il était possible qu’Allen dispute les deux matchs de la semaine.
Contrairement aux années passées, ceci n’est pas une nouvelle dramatique pour le CH, l’auxiliaire n’est pas Mike Condon, Dustin Tokarski ou Keith Kinkaid, c’est Jake Allen qui a prouvé qu’il est plus que capable de prendre le relais. Présentement, il devance d’ailleurs Price aux chapitres de la moyenne de but allouée et du pourcentage d’efficacité.
Bien sûr, si Price devait s’absenter pour une longue période, ça pourrait devenir un problème. Charlie Lindgren est sur l’escouade de reserve depuis le début de la saison et selon les règles de la ligue, les Habs se devaient de rappeler un gardien pour ladite escouade pendant que Lindgren agit comme deuxième gardien demain soir.
Maintenant, quant aux bonnes nouvelles, les Canadiens ont annoncé la signature de Jan Mysak à n contrat d’entrée de 3 ans qui commencera la saison prochaine. Puisqu’il est un joueur de la ligue canadienne, il ne sera pas éligible à jouer dans la ligue américaine la saison prochaine, c’est donc dire que s’il ne fait pas l’équipe après le camp d’entraînement, il sera renvoyé à son équipe junior et le début du contrat glissera jusqu’à l’année suivante.
Quant à Cole Caufield, il a pratiqué pour la première fois avec le Rocket ce matin et Joel Bouchard a confirmé qu’il devrait jouer son premier match vendredi contre les Marlies. Heureusement, le CH ne joue pas vendredi et RDS diffusera le match du club-école, ne manquez pas ça pour voir ce que Caufield peut faire au niveau professionnel
