Bergevin Explains his Decision |

Last night, after Dominique Ducharme finally signed his first win as a head coach, Marc Bergevin launch a bomb on Habs nation by announcing he had fired goaltending coach Stéphane Waite who had been with the team since 2013. In this morning’s press conference, Bergevin explained how and when he had come to that decision.
The GM said that he had taken his decision yesterday afternoon but waited until after the second period to tell Waite he was fired. Why? Because he didn’t want to create a distraction for his team who had a game to win. After the second frame, Bergevin knew Waite wouldn’t have any other interaction with Price and therefore, it was time to send him packing.
The journalists were curious to know if Bergevin had consulted Carey Price because making his decision and the GM was clear: this was his own decision. He even added “If I have to consult players to make personal decisions well, I wouldn’t be in the right job”. He also added that this wasn’t a request by Dominique Ducharme either. Now, more than ever, this is Bergevin’s team. He has fired everyone but Luke Richardson behind the bench and if the players do not deliver the expected results, he’ll be the only one left to blame.
Just like when he fired Claude Julien, Bergevin said that a new voice was needed. By appointing Sean Burke as the Director of goaltending and having him take over Waite’s duties when his quarantine is over, he puts in place a former NHL goalie who has been through the ups and downs of a professional goaltender and the mental struggles they bring.
The way I see it, Bergevin feels that Price’s abilities and technique are on point, but he now needs help in a different department. Furthermore, Waite’s dismissal is not a result solely of this season’s struggles but of a pattern that he has seen over the years.
The GM is not worried that Waite’s dismissal could have a negative impact on Jake Allen, he said: “Allen played well in St-Louis, his play is just a continuation of that”. The timing of the firing is a bit weird but again, Bergevin said he had to be absolutely sure of his decision.
As for Carey Price, he wasn’t very vocal in his zoom media call, it can be summed up by saying that he was surprised when he was told and he is grateful for the time he had with Stephane Waite.
There you have it, Bergevin will have no one left but himself to blame if this new-look Habs team he put in place doesn’t deliver this season, he’ll be the only one left in the firing line. Did something else happen to prompt the decision? We’ll never know, but one thing’s for sure, Bergevin was not in a good mood during this media call and he wasn’t happy to be there. The timing of this firing is puzzling to say the least, but we’ll see if Burke as an impact on Carey Price and Jake Allen, for now, during his quarantine, Burke will be talking to them via Zoom and the Laval goaltending coach will take care of on-ice training.
Hier soir, après que Dominique Ducharme eut finalement signé sa première victoire en tant qu’entraîneur-chef, Marc Bergevin a lancé une bombe sur Habs nation en annonçant qu’il avait congédié l’entraîneur des gardiens Stéphane Waite qui était avec l’équipe depuis 2013. Lors de sa conférence de presse de ce matin, Bergevin a expliqué comment et quand il en était venu à cette décision.
Le DG a dit avoir pris sa décision hier en après-midi mais avoir attendu après la deuxième période du match pour l’annoncer au principal intéressé. Pourquoi? Et bien simplement parce que son équipe avait un match à gagner et il ne voulait pas créer de distraction. Après le 2e vingt, Bergevin savait que Waite n’aurait pas d’autres interactions avec Carey Price et c’était donc le temps de lui montrer la sortie.
Les journalistes étaient curieux de savoir si Bergevin avait consulté Carey Price avant de prendre sa décision et le DG a été très clair : c’était sa propre décision, il a même ajouté : « Si je devais consulter un joueur pour prendre des décisions de personnel, je ne serais pas dans le bon rôle. » Il a de plus mentionné qu’il ne s’agissait pas d’une demande de Dominique Ducharme non plus. Maintenant, plus que jamais, cette équipe est celle de Bergevin. Il a renvoyé tout le monde sauf Luke Richardson derrière le banc et si les joueurs ne livrent pas la merchandise, il sera le seul à blâmer.
Tout comme lorsqu’il a renvoyé Claude Julien, Bergevin a dit qu’une nouvelle voix était nécessaire. En confiant le mandat de Directeur des gardiens à Sean Burke et en lui faisant remplir les responsabilités de Waite après la fin de sa quarantaine, il met en place un ancien gardien de la LNH qui a traversé les hauts et les bas de la carrière d’un gardien professionnel et les difficultés mentales qu’ils peuvent apporter.
À mon avis, Bergevin croit que les habilités et la technique de Price sont à point, mais qu’il a maintenant besoin d’aide dans un autre département. De plus, le renvoi de Waite n’est pas le résultat des contres performances de cette saison, mais bien d’un comportement récurrent qu’il a observé au cours des dernières années.
Le DG n’est pas inquiet quant à savoir si le congédiement de Waite pourrait avoir un impact négatif sur Jake Allen, il a dit: “Allen jouait bien à St-Louis, il a juste continué à bien faire ici”. Le timing de la décision est un peu étranger, mais encore une fois, Bergevin a dit qu’il devait être absolument certain de sa décision.
Quant à Carey Price, il n’a pas été très vocal dans son point de presse, on peut le résumer en disant que la décision l’a surpris et qu’il est reconnaissant pour le temps qu’il a eu avec Stéphane Waite.
Alors voilà, Bergevin n’aura plus personne à blâmer si cette nouvelle mouture de l’équipe ne performe pas cette saison, il sera le seul à faire face au peloton d’exécution. Est-ce que quelque chose d’autre s’est produit pour provoquer la décision? Peut-être, mais on ne le saura pas, une chose est certaine par contre, Bergevin n’était pas de bonne humeur pendant cet appel avec les médias et il n’était pas content d’être là. Le timing du renvoi est étranger, mais on verra si Burke aura un impact sur Carey Price et Jake Allen, pour l’instant, pendant sa quarantaine, Burke parlera aux gardiens sur Zoom et l’entraîneur des gardiens du Rocket se chargera du travail sur la glace.
