The New York Islanders face the Boston Bruins tonight, coming off a 3-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Monday night.

The game against Buffalo was a fairly even game overall and a well-earned victory. New York wasn’t consistently controlling play but they were able to go through a good chunk of the middle of the game without giving up many chances.

It’s still early on but there looks to be some separation between the top five teams and the bottom three teams in the East Division. The Bruins are starting to pull away a bit and lead the division by three points but have played less games than a number of other teams. They’re certainly not a lock just yet but they are in a good position. Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Washington and the Islanders, on the other hand, are ranked second through fifth in the division and are a bit clustered together.

We knew the East Division would be very competitive and that’s certainly proving to be true so far. In a shortened season, games are going to matter more and more and that’s amplified when you’re facing a divisional opponent every game.

The Islanders need to capitalize against the Bruins, who will be without some key players due to injuries.
