What little doubt was left about the Habs roster was set aside yesterday when Marc Bergevin put both Corey Perry and Michael Frolik on waivers. The hope is that no one will claim them, and they’ll land on the team’s taxi squad, but seeing Noah Juulsen be claimed by the Panthers yesterday was a cruel reminder that putting a player on waivers is a gamble. Many argued (me included) that it would have been less risky to put Paul Byron on waivers, but clearly, Bergevin is not interested in running the risk of losing such a polyvalent player even if his salary would have been a deterrent, after all Juulsen’s health was meant to be a deterrent…So much for that theory.
Bergevin was interviewed on many platforms yesterday, he was on TSN 690, RDS and TVA Sports. He did say that the decision had been made and that on top of the 20 players dressed for the first game in Toronto, Victor Mete would be the sole healthy scratch on his roster. He also mentioned that the NHL is aware of the possibility that some games are postponed because of Covid and that’s why every teams has got some “holes” in its calendar. For now, it looks like the Byron-Evans-Lehkonen line will be the Canadiens 4th line. There was another change at practice yesterday, Armia was playing on the left wing and Toffoli on the right of the 3rd line, we’ll see who ends up playing his off wing when the puck drops tomorrow.
This morning, Cap Friendly reported that bearing any waiver claim, the Canadiens’ taxi squad should be: Lindgren, Poehling, Fleury, Perry and Frolik. This leaves one free spot to move a waiver exempt player on and off on days where the team isn’t playing. I also believe that once the Rocket starts its activities, Ryan Poehing will be sent to Laval so he can get plenty of playing time but until then, he can definitely benefit from training with the Habs.
Edit: Corey Perry and Michael Frolik were not claimed. As per Basu, once they spend 30 days on the NHL roster or play 10 games, whichever comes first, they will have to clear waivers to go back to the taxi squad.
Le peu de doute qui subsistait quant à l’alignement du Canadien a été écarté hier quand Bergevin a soumis Corey Perry et Michael Frolik au ballotage. Bien sûr, il espère que personne ne les réclamera et qu’ils se retrouveront sur l’escouade volante du CH, mais de voir Noah Juulsen être réclamé hier par les Panthers a été un cruel rappel que de soumettre un joueur au ballotage est un risque. Plusieurs étaient (moi inclus) d’avis qu’il aurait été moins risqué de soumettre Paul Byron au ballotage, mais clairement, Bergevin de voulait pas courir le risque de perdre un joueur si polyvalent, même si son salaire aurait pu faire hésiter les autres équipes, après tout, la santé de Juulsen aurait dû les faire hésiter aussi… On a vu ce qui est advenu de cette théorie.

Il a également mentionné que la ligue est pleinement consciente de la possibilité que des matchs devront être remis en raison de la pandémie et c’est pourquoi il y a des « trous » au calendrier des équipes. Pour l’instant, il semble donc que le trio Byron-Evans-Lehkonen sera la 4e ligne de Montréal. Il y avait un changement à l’alignement à l’entraînement hier, Armia jouait sur la gauche alors que Toffoli était à droite sur la 3e ligne, restera donc à voir lequel des deux jouera sur son côté opposé demain soir.
Ce matin, Cap Friendly mentionnait que sauf si un joueur est réclamé au ballotage, l’escouade volante du CH sera la suivante: Lindgren, Poehling, Fleury, Perry et Frolik. Ce qui laisse un espace vacant afin d’y insérer un joueur qui n’a pas besoin de passer par le ballotage les joueurs ou l’équipe ne joue pas afin d’économiser. Je crois aussi que lorsque le Rocket reprendra ses activité, Ryan Poehlin le rejoindra afin de jouer le plus possible, mais d’ici là, il bénéficiera de s’entraîner avec l’équipe.
Edit: Corey Perry et Michael Frolik n'ont pas été réclamé. Tel que rapporté par Basu, s'ils passent 30 jours sur l'alignement ou ils jouent 10 matchs, ils devront repasser par le ballotage pour retourner sur l'escouade volante.
