A quick afternoon blog as it was announced on Wednesday afternoon that the Oilers and defenceman William Lagesson had come to an agreement on a two year deal woth 725,000 per season.

The deal is a two-way deal in year one, with the second year being a one-way deal. Though sometime people can mistake two-way and one way as the former allowing the player to be sent down and the latter cannot, that is not the case.

A two-way deal means that Lagesson will make a smaller amount of money if he plays in the AHL versus if he plays in the NHL. On a one way deal regardless of where he plays, he will make the same amount. The cap hit changes for the team regardless based on whether he plays in the AHL or the NHL.

The 24 year old left shot defenceman has been in the system for six years now, drafted 91st overall in the 2014 NHL Draft. Last season Lagesson played his first 8 games in the NHL as an Oiler, posting no points and 8 shots on net. Lagesson is a solid defender who moves the puck well but shouldn't ever be counted on to post an strong offensive numbers.

Currently the defender is enjoying success with Vita Hasten HC of the Swedish League, posting 3 goals and 8 points in 10 games. While impressive it's important to remember the competition he is facing is not of NHL calibre.

Lagesson should be counted on this season as a solid 7th D-man for the Edmonton Oilers, able to comfortably slot onto the third pairing when the need arises. Some type of deal like this has been expected for Lagesson for some time but it's good to see Holland get a couple of seasons out of him.

With the status of Oscar Klefbom remaining up in the air, Edmonton needs some of it's young options like Jones, Lagesson, and eventually Broberg to challenge and earn spots on the left side. Each of these players will have a great opportunity this season to get noticed in a good way.

The only RFA that remains now for the Edmonton Oilers is Ethan Bear. We may not see a signing there until very close to the start of the season, waiting for Klefbom to go on LTIR.

Thanks for reading.
