Fresh off signing a 4-year at $4.25M per deal, Tyler Toffoli faced the Montreal media for the first time this afternoon and here’s my takeaways from what was said.
On this year’s free agency market
It’s different for sure and it’s a stressful process considering the way things are in the world right now. We did speak to Vancouver a bit about a possible extension, but everyone is well aware of their situation and in the end, we didn’t have a lot of conversation.
On his decision to join the Habs
We’d been discussing for about a week and through the weekend. Things really picked up 2 nights ago and then we signed the next morning (afternoon over here on the east coast). A few things helped with the decision, seeing how they played during the playoffs, the skills and the direction they are taking and knowing that they did want to get me when I was traded at the deadline. My agent, Pat (Brisson), really sold me on the city, said I would love it there and that their team had a bright future. Spoke to my wife about it and to my parents as well, it’s going to be great to be closer to them, they didn’t come out west often (his family is from Toronto). I just really think Montreal would be the best fit for me, considering the direction they’ve now taken and the commitment they showed in the return to play.
On his preferred position
I’ve played most of my career on the right wing but I am comfortable playing on both sides and I’ve told Berg as much when he asked if I’d be willing to play on the left wing.
On playing in a market with high expectations
I feel like I got a little taste of what that’s going to be like when I was traded to Vancouver, you know the pressure and the expectations but as you’ve said, Montreal is a whole other animal in itself. I’m really excited to get the chance to play here and I’ll really want to thrive in that market.
On Montreal
I know the city a little bit, the restaurants are great and the atmosphere in the Bell Centre is just electric. There aren’t that many arenas that have that same feel to them, I can’t wait to play there and I’m really excited about this new challenge and opportunity.
On making the switch to the Eastern Conference
I think my style of play translated well when we played eastern conference teams in the past, but we’ll have to see how it goes when we start playing.
On his style of play and expectations
I don’t really set myself targets in terms of points, I care about winning and that’s all there is to it. The important thing is to play well and win, that’s what we play the game for. I also take great pride in my defensive game, I mean early on his LA, if you didn’t play the right way well, you just didn’t play at all (this will be music to Claude Julien’s ears). It’s important to play in a way that allows you to win because it truly is everything, winning the Stanley Cup, it’s just the best thing ever…I really want to bring the cup back to Montreal.
Well, from that conference call it’s obvious that Toffoli is really excited about this new opportunity and that he is looking forward to playing in Montreal. Furthermore, I’m confident that Toffoli’s versatility will make him a Claude Julien favourite in no time. Not only is he able to score but he’s also responsible defensively and can contribute on both the power play and the penalty kill. I don’t know about you, but I’m excited for the next season as well, it’s been a while since the Habs were so active in the off season and I just can’t wait to see how it all pans out. Tomorrow, I’ll discuss the news reported by Pierre LeBrun today about Brendan Gallagher and what GM Marc Bergevin had to say to the media today.

Sur le marché des agents libres cette année
C’est certain que c’est différent et que c’était plus stressant en raison de la situation mondiale actuelle. Nous avons parlé brièvement avec Vancouver à propos d’une possible extension mais tout le monde connait leur situation et finalement, nous ne leur avons donc pas parlé beaucoup.
Sur sa décision de se joindre aux Habs
Nous avons discuté pendant environ une semaine et bien sûr pendant tout le weekend mais les discussions se sont intensifiées les deux derniers soirs et nous avons finalement signé le lendemain matin (après-midi ici sur la côte est). Quelques facteurs ont été importants dans ma prise de décision, le fait d’avoir vu comment ils ont joué pendant les séries, les habilités et la direction que l’équipe est en train de prendre et le fait de savoir qu’ils voulaient m’avoir à la date limite des transactions. Mon agent, Pat (Brisson), m’a vraiment vendu la ville, il a dit que j’aimerais non seulement la ville mais aussi que l’équipe a un avenir très prometteur. J’en ai discuté avec ma femme, avec mes parents aussi puisque ce sera super d’être plus près d’eux, ils ne sont pas venus dans l’ouest souvent (sa famille est à Toronto). Je crois sincèrement que Montréal sera la meilleure solution pour moi considérant la direction dans laquelle l’équipe va et l’engagement qu’ils ont démontré lors du retour au jeu.
Sur sa position préférée
J’ai joué la plus grande partie de ma carrière à l’aile droite mais je suis confortable des deux côtés et c’est ce que j’ai dit à Berg quand il m’a demandé si je serais prêt à jouer à l’aile gauche.
Sur le fait de jouer dans un marché avec de grandes aspirations
Je crois que j’ai eu un avant-goût quand j’ai été échangé à Vancouver, mais comme vous le dites, Montréal est un tout autre animaI. Je suis vraiment excite d’avoir la chance de jouer ici et je veux vraiment exceller dans ce marché.
Sur Montréal
Je connais la ville un petit peu, les restaurants sont excellents et l’atmosphère du Centre Bell est tout simplement électrique. Il n’y a pas beaucoup d’arénas qui sont aussi électrifiant, j’ai vraiment hâte d’y jouer et je suis très excité à l’idée de profiter de cette opportunité.
Sur le fait de passer à la conférence de l’est
Je crois que mon style de jeu convenait très bien quand nous avons joué contre des équipes de l’est dans le passé, mais on devra voir quand on commencera à jouer.
Sur son style de jeu et ses aspirations
Je ne me fixe pas vraiment d’objectifs en terme de points, ce qui compte c’est de gagner et c’est tout. L’important c’est de bien jouer et de gagner, c’est pour ça qu’on joue après tout. Je ressens beaucoup de fierté à bien jouer défensivement et de plus, dans mes premières années à LA, si tu ne jouais pas de la bonne façon, tu ne jouais pas du tout (voilà une déclaration qui sera comme de la musique pour les oreilles de Claude Julien). C’est important de jouer d’une façon qui permet de gagner parce que gagner, c’est mieux que tout, remporter la Coupe Stanley, c’est la meilleure expérience de tous les temps… Je veux vraiment ramener la Coupe à Montréal.
Au final, on peut retenir de cet appel conférence que Toffoli est vraiment excite par cette nouvelle opportunité qui s’offre à lui. De plus, je suis confiante que la polyvalence de Toffoli en fera l’un des favoris de Claude Julien rapidement. Non seulement est-il capable de marquer mais il est aussi responsable défensivement et il peut contribuer non seulement sur l’avantage numérique mais sur le désavantage également. Je ne sais pas pour vous, mais je suis aussi très excitée à l’approche de la prochaine saison, ça fait un bail que le CH n’a pas été si actif pendant la saison morte et j’ai hâte de voir les résultats. Demain, je parlerai de la nouvelle rapportée par Pierre LeBrun à propos de Brendan Gallagher et des commentaires de Marc Bergevin cet après-midi.
