On the Coach's Challenge....
The Coach's Challenge is BROKEN. VERY Broken.
What is the goal here? No pun intended. The goal here is to get the calls right. We have the technology, especially in the playoffs, to get EVERY goal right. Four on-ice officials, several off-ice officials with several camera views,....so why the hell are we asking the teams themselves to be officials and if they get it wrong, why are they getting punished with a penalty.
The past few nights we have seen just how disastrous this system can be. In the Flyers/Islanders game we saw the worst-case scenario almost come to fruition. The Islanders tied the game with just over two minutes to go on a play that was extremely close to being offside. On the Flyers bench, the coach's scurried frantically to see what they could on iPads...The Flyers felt it was close enough to challenge and had to take a chance...knowing full well that if they turn out to be wrong they will give the Islanders a power play for the final two minutes of the game....possibly costing them the series.
The Flyers turned out to be wrong and the Islanders, with all sorts of momentum, got a powerplay for the final two minutes. The Flyers killed it off, but if the Islanders scored I can tell you right now that rule would be changed at the next GM meetings...
It only takes a minute or so to be sure we got it right. The NHL needs to at least look at all third period/overtime goals as being automatically looked at if there is anything close.
On Johnny Hockey...
I have been trying to not put Gaudreau on the rumor chart, but now I am being told it is a necessity. "Gaudreau will be moved if Hall is available," a source continued, "And Hall is available."The Devils and Flyers are two teams that both would love a shot, but I am also hearing the Sabres will make a strong play.....You often hear about players wanting to return to play near where they grew up....but in this case I really believe it to be true. Gaudreau grew up a few miles from where i grew up in South Jersey....Flyers country.
The Flames are looking to add defense help and goaltending help....but can't add salary in order to back up the truck for Hall...
