The Rangers saw their four-game win streak end Sunday with a 3-1 loss to Boston. Late goals doomed New York, as they allowed one with 42 seconds remaining in the first, a second with a 1:18 left in the second and an empty net marker with 13 seconds to go in the game. The Blueshirts got their only goal from Mika Zibanejad on the power play about halfway through the third period but were unable to get the equalizer past Jaroslav Halak. The Rangers, who were without Tony DeAngelo for the second straight game, take on Chicago on Wednesday.

Game recap:

David Quinn Post-Game:

A few thoughts:
1) Boston took advantage of New York's mistakes to win. I thought the Rangers played a solid game but the Bruins are a bear to handle. On the first goal, Alexandar Georgiev, who made 31 saves in the loss, his third straight start in place of Igor Shesterkin (ankle), who hopefully should be able to go Wednesday, tried to clear the zone but didn't get enough to get it out and his clearing attempt went over the head of the Pavel Buchnevich on the boards. Charlie McAvoy stopped the puck and his easy shot hit Zib's skate, rebounded high in the air, off Jacob Trouba's sweater and fluttered past Georgiev, who whiffed on the catch.

On the second, with the Rangers on the power play, Trouba was unable to pass the puck across and was stripped by Charlie Coyle, who raced down and beat Georgiev over his glove up high. Two mistakes, two goals. Boston played a good game, limiting the Rangers' chances and squashed any shot at sustained attack. The Blueshirts were playing their fourth game in six days and third in four, so that might have impacted their play a bit. but the Bruins did play the day before, so both teams might have been slightly gassed.

2) New York finally converted a power play in the third. Zib's shot beat Halak off the post and in, aided by a great screen in front from Buchnevich. After that goal, the Rangers finally started to really pressure Halak, but it was too little, too late. Their best chance was Phil Di Giuseppe in the slot set up by Kaapo Kakko, who was good again, but denied by Halak. The Blueshirts wasted a four-minute power play in the second, then individual penalties late in the second, on which Boston notched the shortie, and four minutes into the third. On the other man-advantages, the Rangers barely generated any shots.

3) Ryan Lindgren was a beast. Taking on Brad Marchand and others, Lindgren showed his former team what he brings to the table. Quinn rolled the first two pairings most of the game, as Marc Staal saw just 12:23 and Brendan Smith 11:27 in the game. Trouba, Brady Skjei and Adam Fox all saw at least 21:30 of action with Fox seeing major minutes on the power play.

Nice whine Brad:

Buch dished out a response on the ice earlier:

4) Blake Coleman, signed for one more season at $1.8 million, went to Tampa for Nolan Foote and Vancouver's 2020 first round pick. New Jersey did sell high, but with a year left on his deal, top-nine placement and ability to kill penalties, Coleman has value. The Lightning need to win in the next few years before their window ends, so not surprising he went there. But Colorado supposedly thought they had a deal for him before Coleman landed in the Sunshine State.

Kreider's value might have risen a bit with this trade, since one more player is off the market. The one loss may not change the team's plans but it does hurt playoff chances. games Wednesday at Chicago and Friday at Carolina, then home versus San Jose may go a long way to deciding how New York proceeds. On Sunday, Mika Zibanejad is doing a signing event at Mustang Harry, see details below. You wonder what the mood will be like if the Rangers look all three games prior to the meet and greet.
