The San Jose Sharks season has gone from bad to worse, as two-time Norris Trophy winner Erik Karlsson has been lost for the rest of the season with a broken thumb.

The Sharks were expected to be sellers before the February 24th trade deadline, but the placing of Karlsson's $11.5 Million salary on LTIR will allow GM Doug Wilson to retain salary on rentals like Brenden Dillon and Melker Karlsson so the Sharks to get more in return before the deadline.

Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau are also expiring contracts, but it is uncertain whether either would be willing to be traded in the next nine days to go on a Stanley Cup run....
