2 games does not a “streak” make, but Detroit looked like a much more confident team tonight. Jonathan Bernier faced 43 shots and only one made it past him That, in the end, was the difference maker. Full marks to a much better defensive zone effort by Detroit in general. Madison Bowey, just recalled, made some very good plays to help clear the crease. Mike Green looked about 3 years younger and was rewarded for his defensive play with a power play goal. Hronek, again, looks like he is really turning the corner as an NHL pro. Zadina had some impressive back checking, and kept his cool when Montreal began to try and goad him toward the end of the game.

To Montreal’s credit, they have a ferocious forecheck. Many times, the entire 5 man unit is moving the puck. A shot on net is followed by stick battles and creating rebound chances. It’s easy to see why they lead the league in shots on net. Claude Julien has changed a great deal in his coaching philosophy. Shea Weber will drive the net throughout the game, working the puck down low and making great strides to have an impact offensively. Montreal will crash the crease, provide screens and work on getting fresh bodies off of the bench to extend the cycle. The Canadiens did everything but score for most of the game, which made Bernier’s effort even more impressive.

Detroit, for much of the season, has lacked confidence and goal tending. Tonight, they had both. The first goal of the game was the direct result of Larkin winning a puck battle behind the net with a quick feed to Bertuzzi who made no mistake in getting the shot on net. When those two are clicking, they look fast. The “bang bang” plays that were a hallmark of early success for the line (with Mantha) at the beginning of the season are impressive. Fabbri fits well on that line also. He has elevated his physical play and is relentless on the puck. It seems like he gets better and better, this reset is mutually beneficial to player and team as any I can remember.

At first, it was discouraging to see Mantha moved to the 2nd line. But then, his attitude about it was superb. He acknowledged the looks that the top line had been getting and wanted to help add depth working with Zadina and Filppula. It didn’t take long to notice the big Frenchman. For some reason, it is difficult for opposing players to get the puck past Mantha. He’s using his frame in impressive ways to forecheck and shut down defensive outlets. He even earned 4 minutes in the box for a brief skirmish with Jeff Petry.

Goaltending makes everyone look better, or worse, depending on the outcome. it was easy to see the better effort of the players tonight because they weren’t down 2 or 3 goals during the game. Things came together for the squad for a much needed win (again). They look, and act, like a much different group right now. It will be interesting to see if they can find success at home against L.A. with a quick turnaround.

Tonight was a good night for glimpses. Zadina is finding his way. Larkin, Bertuzzi, Mantha and Fabbri all showed flashes of the promise each player has. Athanasiou had some good looks, and his intense forecheck led directly to the power play tally. It’s not easy to work a puck through Shea Weber, but he managed to do it.

It’s a fun trip back tonight. Everyone will be in a good mood and momentum is building. Hopefully the team will be ready to face off against the Kings tomorrow.
