*Apologies that I didn’t have time for the pre-game report yesterday.*

The Carolina Hurricanes dropped another one yesterday, losing 4-2 to the New York Rangers. Here’s the game recap.

Henrik Lundqvist made his first (of many) great saves about 10 minutes into the game on a Hurricanes power play, as Sebastian Aho got the puck to Ryan Dzingel in front but Lundqvist was positioned perfectly to make the save on the shot, being one that was taken from a great location. The Hurricanes then sustained a ton of pressure and got three or four shots in about 15 seconds, resulting in (at least) one post and a series of saves from Lundqvist.

It was New York who opened the scoring though, as Ryan Strome found Artemi Panarin alone in front and he beat Mrazek who didn’t have much of a chance to get into position. Despite Carolina outshooting New York by a ridiculous 22-6 margin in the first period, the Rangers lead 1-0 after the period.

After continuing their dominance into the second period, the Hurricanes finally beat Lundqvist on their 31st shot as Dougie Hamilton tipped Jaccob Slavin’s point shot, completely changing the direction and tying the game. The Rangers regained their lead a bit later though, as Brendan Lemieux tipped in a shot from Tony DeAngelo on a power play.

New York increased the lead to 3-1, as Pavel Buchnevich was able to strip Jake Gardiner of the puck then walk all the way in front of the net to tuck it in past Mrazek (though I think Filip Chytil got the last touch for the goal). I mentioned this just last game but Gardiner can’t keep allowing players to walk to the front of the net like he does and he didn’t even make an effort to get in Buchnevich’s way until it was too late.

From there, Lundqvist continued to make save after save, many coming from point-blank range. Strangely enough, Carolina’s second goal came when Sebastian Aho simply threw the puck on net from the boards, it deflected off of Lias Andersson’s stick and got between the Lundqvist’s pads.

That’s as close as the Hurricanes would come though, as Adam Fox would bury the puck into the empty net after a series of bounces to give the Rangers a 4-2 win.

You certainly can’t complain about Carolina’s effort in this one. They outshot the Rangers 47-19 and won 61 percent of faceoffs. The goals Mrazek let in weren’t really bad goals either. I know I said this last game as well but Carolina ran up against a hot goalie once again. They’ve scored just three goals on their last 81 shots, which is absurd.

The bounces will come soon enough.
