Every week starts a new head to head match up. You will have 81.5 million dollars per week to spend and you must select all of your players before the first game starts on Monday.

There will be four open slots available on the left wing, four on the right, four at center and six on defense. You will also have to select two goalies for the week. It’s best to spend as much of the cap as you can selecting the best players for the week from a fantasy perspective.

For example-

Mcdavid makes 12.5 million and is one of, if not the best fantasy player there is in your league (pending how it’s setup). The Oilers have 2 games that week. Sean Monahan who is also a center has a cap hit of 6.375 million and the Flames play 3 games that week.

What you have to look at is who the Flames are playing, who the Oilers are playing, are there any games back to back and what’s the odds of McDavid outscoring Monahan with one less game to played? On top of that it’s going to cost you an extra 6+ million just to take McDavid.

My point here is it’s not always best to take the best player. You have to look at more than just the name and put some thought into your selections and you should have a much better end result.

I’m a big fan of scouring the “war board” and seeing who plays who that week and how many games each team has and who has the back to back games. This let’s me get some ideas of who I might want to use in a spot start goalie (for other fantasy pools). It also helps set me up accordingly for the HBSL as I can look at which teams play the most and select their best fantasy players to slot into my lineup.

I love the cheap, young, high end talent who rack up the fantasy points but cost very little against your cap. Key in on these players as you may find yourself looking for them to add week 1 against your opponent.

Some of the high end goaltenders will cost you big bucks, and younger guys like Binnington cost you peanuts last season. I’ll be keeping an eye on Carter Hart as he only costs 730k and should get a good look this season as he and the Flyers want to continue his growth in the NHL.

It’s all about cap management and picking the strongest team. Be sure to change your lineupe each week and be active setting your lines. A few losses doesn’t put you out of the playoff hunt so just keep at it and you can look at who your opponent picks and take some tips off their picks if they hand you a loss on the week.
