Avalanche prospect A.J. Greer and Columbus Blue Jackets prospect Sonny Milano were arrested Sunday morning in New York City and charged with third-degree assault, a misdemeanor, for allegedly beating up a man in a Greenwich Village apartment, the New York Post reported.

The players were charged at the Sixth Precinct station house and released after being ticketed to appear in court Sept. 4, the paper reported.

The Avalanche and Blue Jackets said in separate statements that they were aware of the allegations but would withhold further comment pending an investigation.

The paper said the players were arrested at an apartment in Greenwich Village at about 6:30 a.m. ET after allegedly fighting with a 28-year-old man over their share of a bar bill that was paid an hour earlier at 1 Oak, a popular club in Chelsea.

The paper cited authorities as saying the alleged victim had jaw and rib pain, as well as injuries to his neck and bicep. He declined medical treatment, the paper said, but called police.

A man who identified himself as Milano’s father told the paper that the dispute wasn’t over money.

“It wasn’t over a bill,” he said. “The guy was getting rowdy in their apartment. They asked him to leave and he wouldn’t. That’s it.”

Greer, 22, is from Joliette, Quebec. He was a second-round pick (No. 39) of the Avalanche in the 2015 NHL draft. He had a goal and an assist in 15 games with the Avalanche last season and 44 points (19 goals, 25 assists) in 54 games with the AHL Colorado Eagles. He has a goal and five assists in 37 career games with the Avalanche.

Milano, 23, is from Massapequa, N.Y. He was the Blue Jackets’ first-round pick (No. 16) in 2014. He had a goal in eight games with Columbus last season and 24 points (11 goals, 13 assists) in 27 games with the Cleveland Monsters of the AHL.

Both players are restricted free agents.
