About those Patrick Marleau rumors.....

I'm sure by now that most of you have heard Patrick Marleau is on his way out of Toronto.

Marleau, 40, is coming off his worst offensive season in nearly two decades, he's entering the last year of his deal and the Maple Leafs are actively trying to free up cap space for more pressing Marners, er... matters. Marleau is not a poster boy for all the cap casualties out there.

At first, it was said the veteran forward was open to being traded to a team closer to his family in San Jose, but according to Nick Kypreos, Marleau has narrowed his list down to just one team - The San Jose Sharks.

Marleau left the Sharks as the team's leader in games, goals, points, game-winning goals, power-play goals, short-handed goals, and shots. He turned down a chance to stay with the Sharks a couple of years ago to go to an "extremely exciting " team. His words, not mine.

Now on the downside of his career, when doors are starting to close right before his eyes, he suddenly wants to return to a place he called "home" for 20 years? When Marleau walked away from the Sharks - it was for good. As far as San Jose should be concerned, this ship has sailed.

A reunion might be a really nice feel-good story if it wasn't for the fact that it does nothing to benefit the Sharks.

San Jose has too much work to do to fill out their roster. Doug Wilson is already hard at work trying to make room for guys like Joe Pavelski and Timo Meier. Trying to squeeze in Marleau shouldn't even be a consideration. Especially since Kyproes believes it would take a third team, a buyout, and a new mini-deal to make it happen. Thanks, but no thanks.

Nevermind that old saying... sometimes you CAN'T go home again. San Jose will always love Patrick Marleau, they just don't need him anymore.

Also, they already have that 10-year Joe Thornton extension to worry about. ;)

What are your thoughts? Heartstrings being pulled or are you like me and give it a hard pass?

Thanks for reading,
Steve
