Flyers closing in on extension for York. What would you pay? |

So let’s talk about the Cam York. Others are reporting the Flyers are closing in on an extension for this California D-man.
Are they close?
My soures are saying it’s actually going pretty slowly, but there’s no reason for concern at this point….
On Cam…
He’s been a captain wherever he played, including the world juniors team. This is not a kid who is Southern California laid back like it’s been painted at times by fans without much knowledge to what the players are actually like…
This is a kid who gets pissed over. This is a kid gets frustrated and he needs to have the team show confidence in him because he’s going out on a limb a lot of times… at least he wants to play that way. I feel like from the last coach she got the depression a lot that he was supposed to do that, but then he would always got yelled at two when there was a miss take mad….
When you watch the fire, the Panthers play the defense pinch all the time and no one blames them if something goes wrong because theor so well coached that someone’s picking up those defensive responsibilities….. The flyers were terrible at that last year. As young teams tend to bee….
But the scoop on this kid is he’s got some sandpaper and he doesn’t like to be talked down to and that’s all right. I know some people hold it against him because the flyers drafted him before Cole Caulfield. But how is that on Cam? Maybe the flyers should’ve taken Cold Caulfeld. At the time I was desperately saying rake Caulfield, but they needed at defenseman at the time and they did got a good player….
Listen, no one in the fire organization will be OK with him going at John Tortorella in the locker room. Remember this kid has spent most of his career playing as a captain on a team. Captains on teams have to deal with coaches all the time. They have to sell the system of the coaches to the players. They are the go between. So he’s the kid who listens to his coach, and when his coach says your playing lazy, he believes it…. And he was making some lazy mistakes. All defensemen make lazy mistakes, especially the young cones…. One minute he was being told to be more careful defensively the next minute he was told to jump up in the play more, despite the fact he was playing along with Sanheim, who is basically the same kind of player as him…..
The whole time the team is losing the coaches, pointing him out is making mistakes and honestly when your defenseman in the NHL, you have to be instinctual and it’s hard to be in when you’re taking all this direction….
When he was benched for that whole game, I was watching him a lot, and you could see in his eyes the fire that burns in this kid…. And yes, his benching was legit because he went after a coach, but if you think that’s the first Flyers player in this franchise history who has stood up and taken on a coach….. your under 30 years old. I remember it happening one time in the 80s and looking at at Ed Snyder, who took it seriously but also he could tell deep downy was like kids got something there…. Let’s take that anger on the ice.
So I’ve made my case for Can York. How much does he get?
He isn’t coming off the best year for him so obviously to negotiate. However, he’s a top for defenseman in the NHL and I think that’s a given and people realize there around the league. I expect him to make a huge surprise this year and within three years be a major factor for the Flyers.
Based on the 2024-25 numbers… which are in a lower cap then were gonna have… an average top four defenseman in the NHL makes between 5.5 million and 5.6 million per year….
Here’s a quick breakdown of salaries I did moving into this UFA day.
Elite number one top defenseman: 8-11M
Solid top 2 pairing: 6.5 to 8.5
Second Pairing Vet: 4-6.5
Young Second Pair Bridge Deal: 4-6.5
What I would give Cam York….
I’d try to get 7 years at 62.5M
Three years into the deal that contract will look like a steel as cap continues to go up, especially if we get expansion money in…
I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments…
