We are 41 days away from the start of the Blackhawks regular season schedule, and well, there is still no news to talk about regarding this team. So I figure, why not continue to beat the dead horse that is Connor Bedard? What a summer he is having, from being the first overall pick to having Sherwood back the money truck up to make him the face of their attempt to comeback into hockey relevance. He continues to be the humble Canadian kid, saying all the right things.
This week he is taking part in the yearly BioSteel Camp, where the best of the best go to train on and off the ice. Bedard has been given the chance to train and learn from Connor McDavid, who knows a thing or two about coming into this league with high expectations not only set by himself but also by the media and the fanbase. "Connor has given me lots of good advice. There are some things he's said about what to expect. It's obviously not easy. It's the best league in the world. It's about just preparing yourself the best you can, and I feel like I've done that this summer. I've worked really hard."
For me, the biggest takeaway from Bedard's media scrum this week is what his mindset is going into this year. Bedard said, "I think if you're worried about what other people are saying or what you guys write about me... I'm trying to pursue a dream. There's obviously pressure from the outside. I'm hard on myself. But pressure goes away, in my mind, when you're just doing what you love. I've dreamed of playing in this league for 18 years now. So I wouldn't really think of outside noise too much."
It's hard not to get excited when your team drafts a potential generational talent, but it's even harder when this kid, at 18, already has the mind set of an 18-year-old vet. Between all that and the videos of him training and his skills on the ice, it's going to be a very exciting time to watch Bedard develop into, hopefully, the next big thing in hockey.

Another note: If any of you are hockey gear fanatics, last week we had the mastermind behind the GearGeek website and social accounts on the WCBPodcast for an awesome interview talking all things pro stock equipment and touching on more of how big it is for Sherwood to land Bedard.
