Summary:
At the end of the first period, Detroit was outshooting MN 10-6 as the Wild struggled for near half of the first frame to register a shot on net. A Kostin penalty in the final 2 minutes put the Wild on the board and in the game. Final SOG were 38-23 in Minnesota’s favor but Detroit won the game 4-1. (2 power play goals from Perron, 1 4 on 4 from Larkin, and an empty net tally from Gostisbehere who assisted on the first 3).

Detroit has been on the other side of a game like this many times during the rebuild. To see the Bench Boss for Minnesota just look exasperated as the team tried to close the 2 goal gap in the final minutes of the game said it all. There is frustration, and only part of it is 14 million in cap space lost to 2 buyouts.

Kaprizov makes incredibly good plays and Foligno is physical and defensively strong. This was a goalie win for Detroit as Lyon has looked really good in limited action. That said, Gostisbehere was present all over the ice as his scoring contributions were complemented by better defensive play as the team deals with the loss of Walman. As tight lipped as the broadcast team is about the injury, this could be a bad one. An LTIR dating back to….type of bad.

In the second period, the Wings had nothing going until Hartman got a 2 for 1 after jousting with Seider a bit. Not a small part of me thinks the refs had a second look at what could have been a dangerous slew foot on Debrincat. Hartman himself took some damage early on as his head collided with the boards while delivering a hard check. He may not feel great in the morning after that play.

In the end, Detroit is back inside the top 3 Atlantic spots with Toronto close at their heels in wild card position. The post season pic may be painted by Boston if the wheels come off. There are many who expect it could go that way, but the Bruins started the year on a tear and could surprise the nay sayers throughout the season.

There are really only 2 concerns about Detroit in this one that have left any sort of lasting imprint. First, the team was rag dolled quite a bit. At times some of the forwards were just tossed aside like empty moving boxes. Not great to see.

Second, too many players passing on shots. Veleno and Copp stood out in this area. Veleno is working the balancing act and now has to become a little more selfish. Copp just looks like he is frustrated with himself. Hopefully whoever is playing DJ in the room can get everyone feeling loose and good about a 3rd straight win after a rough overseas jaunt.

First Period Red Wings goals:
Perron opens up the scoring on the power play. 1 shot in the game, 1 goal.

First Period:

1:09 into the game, during MNs first trip to the O zone Veleno goes to the box for tripping before anyone has a shot on goal. Wings kill 1:59 before drawing a penalty (still no shots). 1 second of 4 on 4.
Perron cashes in at 4:06 after some nice puck movement and a slick pass from Raymond after a shoulder drop cut into the slot area by the former 4th overall pick. 1-0 DET, 1 shot in the game.

At 10:46 Boldy got a breakaway but got called for a penalty in doing so. Wings back to the advantage. Unable to cash in but some decent pressure at times. Foligno doing plenty for the Wild on the kill.

Right around the 16 minute mark Detroit goes back to the power play. Unable to convert again but MN is stuck on the ice after icing the puck at expiration.

With 24.4 seconds left Kostin puts MN on the power play via trip. MN scores with 11.3 seconds left. Kostin doing the well deserved skate of shame. 1-1.

Score: 1-1
Shots: 10-6 DET

Second Period Red Wings goals:
Larkin’s 4 on 4 tally (coast to coast courtesy of the Ghost)

Second Period:
Detroit had nothing going for the entire period as MN dominated the middle stanza. Then there was a 4 on 4. At 16:57 Larkin tapped in his own rebound after a taking a breakout pass from Gostisbehere from behind the Wings net nearly 200 ft away. 2-1 DET.

The celebration could be short lived as Detroit takes another end of period penalty this time by Copp with 2:29 left in the frame. Wings kill the penalty. Manage to end period 1 ahead.

Score: 2-1 DET
Shots: 20-16 MN (outshot DET 14-10 in middle frame)

Third Period Red Wings goals:
Perrons 2nd power play goal and 300th career tally.

Gostisbehere empty net, 4th point of the game

Third Period:

Wings start w more Jump and go to Power Play just 52 seconds into the third period. 36 seconds in Perron gets his second of the night and 300th career goal. 3-1 DET. Larkin with nice faceoff 2nd effort and Ghost get apples.

Hartman slew foot to Debrincat unpunished, Debrincat retaliates and goes to box. Wings kill it off.

Makeup call sees Hartman take 2 for 1 with 8:25 left. Wings back on power play. Wings don’t convert.

Seider to the box for delay of game w 4:41 left. Wings kill it off. 2:04 and Wings get SOG and faceoff. Wild pull goalie w 1:30 left. Lyon freezes puck w 58.4 seconds left. Time out MN.

Gostisbehere gets an empty net goal with 22.9 seconds left. 4th point for Ghost.

Final Score: 4-1 DET
Final Shots: 38-23 MN
