Summary - The team is taking shape, Seider continues to look like the best of the bunch in terms of first round drafts for Yzerman. The more games that are played with Larkin and Debrincat, the more I lean toward putting Perron on that line. Raymond may find a little more breathing room on the second line, and there may be some fluidity as the season goes.
A shame to lose Fabbri, hopefully his early exit was part precautionary as he seems to find the IR list fairly often.
Washington did a nice job shutting down passing lines in the first period, and it seems that whether the Wings are telegraphing the pass or just have it as part of the overall strategy, too many rushes are shut down in that way. It is on the player to decide of a potential rebound (or lucky goal) is more valuable than the play they worked on.
Larkin’s 2 goals were both well executed. Seems to be able to shoot right from the red line at a sharp angle (Z used to do the same). His second goal was just a rush with a good snap. Confidence and maturity continue to grow. Compher seems to still be looking for his game in Detroit, while Cross Hanas is impressing.
Good on Kasper for accepting a challenge, but not something I want to see a lot of when you give up 4 inches and several pounds.
Good movement on the power play and some signs of what the team will look like in 2 weeks. Unfortunately the stadium wasn’t packed but regular season success will do something for that. Still convinced Danielson will be better off with a year in jr and a chance to put on some weight. Makes good plays, but no need to rush. Players do still target the rookies unfortunately.
A win is always nice, but obviously this wasn’t Washington’s top squad. Fun night in general.
First Period:
Czarnik goal
At 4:15 Detroit got its first chance on the power play. Raymond on the ice with Larkin and Debrincat and Seider asharing the blue line with Walman. A couple of really good chances with 30 seconds later and then at 21 seconds left the goalie for Washington gloved the shot for a faceoff in the right dot. Copp comes out with Danielson and Soderblom with Walman still out there. I think Soderblom is the 5th player. No score on the power play but a ripper from Czarnik after getting the puck from Hanas made its way through at 7:19. 1-0 Detroit. Shots 4-2 Detroit.
Seider Power Play Goal
Wyatt Newpower threw a huge hit around 2 minutes. at 11:58. Wings end up going to power play after former Griffin McLrath got a penalty in the neutral zone. With 6:48 left in regulation Raymond and Seider were passing back and forth until Seider launched it at the net and scored (may have been deflected by Washington D. 2-0 Detroit. Shots 9-6 Detroit.
Some good looks for Detroit around the 17 minute mark. Washington goal tending up for the task. With 13 seconds left Holl goes to the box for tripping. Caps on the PP. unable to cash in for the abbreviated time, will have 1:47 of power play time to start the second.
Score:2-0 DET
Shots:11-10 DET
Second Period
Larkin power play goal
Detroit ended up going short handed early in the period but Washington got called on two penalties. Detroit was able to cash in as Larkin roofed a goal very similar to the first game. Seems like a near impossible angle with one skate behind the red line. 3-0 DET
Cross Hanas goal
Washington struck back with a power play goal by Dylan Strome at 8:47. 3-1 DET. Cross Hanas restored the 3 goal lead at 13:20. 4-1 DET. Washington wasn’t done and at 15:00 Matthew Phillips scored to get the Caps back within 2 goals.
Score: 4-2 DET
Shots: 20-15 WASH
Third Period:
Washington definitely energized. Detroit needs to grab hold of the play. Fabbri out for the night, “upper body”. Poor guy seems destined for IR. Cobb got an accidental skate to the lip around 3 minutes in. Luckily not too bad. Scary how quick it can happen.
Larkin’s second of the night
The teams went 4 on 4 with offsetting roughing penalties for Seider and Milano. 33 seconds in Larkin grabbed the puck around center ice, circled back, skated up the middle and snapped a beauty. 5-2 DET.
At 12:25 Hanas attempted some dental work that looked incredibly painful. Somehow no penalty. Washington would be rightly unhappy on that one.
A couple of minutes later Walman was hooked and no call made, so that may even things up.
Holl with some good defense around the 15 minute mark. The team is starting to come together a bit more. I may still lean toward putting Perron on the top line as net front and half wall work. Hanas seems to keep putting himself in the conversation. Good preseason/camp.
At 2:44 Caps pull the goalie. With 1:47 left Mantha and Kasper. Dropped the gloves. Mantha got some good shots in. Credit to Kasper but not what you want to see. He took a slash from Mo and it went down. Red Wings on power play for the slash.
Wings seem content to kill time and Caps doings a good job limiting entries.
