The Carolina Hurricanes announced today that Don Waddell has stepped down as president and general manager of the team.

The news comes as Waddell’s contract was reportedly set to expire.

Waddell has been the Hurricanes’ president since 2014, before taking over general manager duties in 2018. Since Waddell assumed the GM position, the Hurricanes have reached the playoffs in six straight years. Waddell has reportedly interviewed in Columbus, according to Elliotte Friedman.

The team announced that Eric Tulsky will serve as the team’s interim general manager in Waddell’s departure. Tulsky has been with the team since 2015, and has served as assistant general manager since 2021.

Waddell’s departure comes as a bit of a surprise. While reports had began to surface that he could be set to leave the team, it still seemed like the turnaround time was very quick between those reports surfacing, and the announcement.

Over his years as Hurricanes’ GM, Waddell undoubtedly had more hits than misses, arguably establishing himself as one of the league’s top managers. He was incredibly creative and was seemingly able to win trades or get good-value contracts more often than not. Waddell has set the team up very well, but of course, any change always creates uncertainty.
