The Pittsburgh Penguins spent the offseason revamping their roster. They also started to revamp their televisions broadcasts. Gone are Steve Mears and Bob Errey. The new changes are starting to be officially announced.

As was expected Josh Getzoff has been named the play by play announcer for Sportsnet Pittsburgh. Getzoff has been serving in the same role for the radio side for a number of years.

New to the broadcast will be Hailey Hunter.

Most recently, Hunter covered golf for NBC Sports’ Golf Channel and PGA Tour Entertainment, in addition to serving as a reporter for the 2022 Winter Olympics. Prior to that, she served as the team reporter and host for the New York Islanders during the 2021-22 season. She also spent time working for a local CBS affiliate in Jackson, MS as a sports reporter and weekend anchor where she primarily covered the SEC and University of Mississippi athletics.

I’m guessing I’ve come across her work from the Golf Channel at some point, but I don’t have a recollection of it. I’m hopeful this isn’t a situation where you are getting the bare minimum information with a canned presentation. This is a fresh start for the broadcast and I want it to reflect a modern take on a fast paced and exciting sport.

The best news is Dan Potash will be staying on. He has been the only consistently good part of Penguins broadcasts for years now. I think he will do a really good job as the studio host, but at the same time I will miss his player interactions being the rinkside reporter.

Curiously missing from the announcement is the color commentator role. It had been expected Colby Armstrong would be part of the new crew or that Phil Bourque would be making the jump with Getzoff to the television side. Bourque is staying on radio and will work with Steve Mears. I still think Armstrong will be a part of the broadcast, but we’ll have to wait for an official announcement.

Lastly, you know the era is close to the end when Sid the Kid is now Sid the Just for Men pitchman
