So much going on today…Fun times indeed…
I just wanted to do a quick mariner update before my big blog which will come out around one along with my rumor chart and everything else which comes out this afternoon. Will be doing a podcast tomorrow and more.
Have to give major props to Darren Dreger and Elliott Friedman who are doing a hell of a job keeping on top of the Mitch Marner situation….
Following up on their reporting….
The two teams are definitely in discussion.
It started off as a “sign and trade” and now it looks like it’s turned into a “ trading for rights” discussion.
Toronto would much rather do a “sign and trade” and at least get something for the asset(Roy has been mentioned) .
However, a couple things are working against that now… first off. The number of places Marner really wants to go to was only 2. Vegas and LA. But really people think LA was just thrown in there as negotiating team. Including LA right now thinking that. In fact, the kings are pretty ticked off. They were doing a lot to make it possible to get Marner signed and now I heard they might be filing tampering charges…. One source in LA told me last night that the team is basically just “thrown in the towel” on this.
The NHL is definitely looking for a tampering example here because tampering in the NHL is at a ridiculous pace. A high profile signing like this could really help the NHL tighten things down.
And here’s the problem with that. Vegas has definitely played with the tampering line before.
There are some believe that the concept of “sign and trade” was kind of thrown in at the last second. The teams are allowed to discuss a trade for Marner, but not technicallyallowed to discuss a “sign and trade” because that would be tampering. However, Toronto could sign him and then trade him, but the second name like Roy is reported that that gives something the NHL loves to call “ the appearance of evil!” Could always say they were trying to trade somebody else for Roy… but then they kinda just look guilty… the way this is supposed to work is Toronto sign mariner to a contract and then discuss a trade with Vegas. The NHL knows it never happens that way. But really could be looking to make an example as I said..
The Kings and Vegas are of course mortal enemies. So if LA feels they were used in any way shape or form, They’re gonna go after Vegas. The NHL doesn’t believe that everything is legal in Vegas….. nor do they believe what’s said in Vegas stays in Vegas.
But the Knights management does have that attitude and carries quite a reputation for being a team that you have to be careful with when you’re dealing with them… more than one GM over the years has complained to me that they were basically told that he was in place for a trade minutes before the player was traded someplace else…. Vegas doesn’t exactly lead the league in protocol when it comes to these kind of things.
So now it’s gonna get very quiet. If you’ve noticed there, haven’t been many updates since last night on this. And we all know this is still going on behind the scenes. But it’s gonna get quiet because reporters are probably being told by certain people in Toronto that this is off the record. Everybody is being very careful now because of the possible tampering charges.
So I wouldn’t expect many scoops until this is absolutely done…
LA is watching all the insiders like a hawk….. anything they say will be used against them… and by then I mean Vegas in Toronto..
So what’s next for LA?
There are rumors out there right now that they are looking to trade for Bow Byram… the name that is bouncing around in the rumor male is Byfield… doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me, but it’s out there…. Look fo LA to be aggressive because they really have pulled completely off of Marner.
