RFA Spotlight: Marco Rossi. 5 teams. Trade or Offer Sheet? |

|
As the NHL decreases to four teams apter tonight, we are going to ramp up our off-season coverage here by talking about various RFAs and UFAs, and just plain trade targets that are going to make our summer one of the ones in a while…
Up first, one of the mote intriguing names out there…Marco Rossi.
Rossi is all of 5’"9” but a talented playmaking center with mad skills and coming off his best eason yet, with 24 goals and 36 assists…
Rossi was the ninth overall pick by the Wild in the 2020 draft. Rossi has now put up two seasons where he played in all 82 games. So his size really hasn’t been an issue…
What was he making?
He is coming off his rookie three-year salary that paid him around $ 25M but had a cap hit of $ 833k.
Will the Wild keep him?
Based on production, Rossi’s bidding should start around $ 5.5M.
The Wild would obviously love to keep Rossi, but they’re also dealing with the impendingcontract of Kaprisov…and that will be in the $ 11M range….if they can keep him.. There are many rumors out there about Kaprisov. I’ve heard that The Thrill wants to play in Chicago in a similar way that Panarin wanted to play for the Rangers… so if he wants to go UFA, nothing’s gonna stop him. The Wild has said that they would make him the highest paid player and really wanna keep him. The Wild said clearly that nobody else would pay more for him than they will.
Value based on the Ek Number…
If you remember the Ek Number takes into account the average points per dollar made, as well as how much the cap is increasing… It doesn’t take a player’s intangibles as a factor, so it’s obviously going to be low. It also doesn’t take bidding wars into account. It just basically values the player based on his statistics from last season. This summer’s Ek Number is 90,579. This means Rossi, on production alone, should be paid $5.43M. So where he is a UFA, the bidding would start somewhere around there.
Rossi is, of course, an RFA… so therefore for a team to grab him, they would have to either offer sheet him, or trade for him. Talking to people and sources around the league seems more likely that a trade will happen with him than an offer sheet.
