Eric Engels: Owners' Offer--Effect on Subban Negotiation?
- EricEngels

Agreed.

edit: I would sign Subban long term. Like 6 yrs.

Now it is up to the GM and head coach to get good veterans in the team to help our young guns like Subban, but also in the near future Beaulieu, Tirordi, Galy etc..

you can't help but wonder if Bergevin is now using six years as leverage
- EricEngels

Actually in this case I would think it would be the opposite....considering Subban would be a UFA in 4 years at 27.

you'd think the Habs would like to take a couple of years away from the UFA years and Subban would want to be compensated for that.

Sounds fair, I think 4.25 would do it though.

Or, are deals still being negotiated on the premise that nothing's changed yet, and until it does, impending changes are irrelevant?

i believe so. we don't know what that offer from the NHL meant. was it a declaration of war? maybe. but some wars last 6 days. we have no idea where the owners see the compromise falling or how firmly this initial offer establishes their negotiating position.

contracts might be capped but it won't be at 5 years. the 6- and 7-year deals aren't the problem. it's the 10-year deals that are the issue so i see it being capped at 7 or 8 if at all. so there is no extra incentive to sign for 6. especially when the initial offer is 5. and the players will give up revenue portion before raising UFA standards so i don't forsee a huge change there.

Not sure they are going to change the way they negotiate with Subban based on an absurd "proposal" by the owners.

I'm hoping the owners have at least determined what they are eventually willing to settle on once the posturing is over which should give them a better indication of where they will be.

same for the PA...

I think we will hve to endure the D we have now for another year or 2 when we should have a better idea of the prospects that can make an impact.
