I don't like it. As I've said elsewhere, Arnott is huge, but he's scarcely more physical than Gagner. Think about that: the constantly derided Gagner threw hits as much, had more penalties and dropped the gloves more readily than the 6'5" 220 Arnott last season.

We are not at all missing a 3rd line centre with two-way quality. His name is Shawn Horcoff, and perhaps no forward on the Oilers is better than him defensively, whereas he's shown to be perfectly ably suited to 3rd line centre duties offensively. He is overpaid, he's not a poor player.

Offensively, is Arnott going to produce much more than Horcoff can be at this point? Defensively, he's worse, and he's not as good at FO as Belanger. I see no good reason to bring him on.

yea that makes perfect sense.. i just wish there was a way to trade horcoff though because he's going to be the third line centre for a few more years making it harder for lander to make that transition playing on the 4th line or not at all as we still have belanger. only problem with our forwards is size, and worst is that even our bottom 6 which should usually have big players has a few small players as well! i think we need to trade Pajaarvi Hemsky, Gagner, Klefbom(i know, it would suck), and perhaps one of ryan jones or ben eager.. and adding a few 1st round draft picks should focus on acquiring both Ryan and Weber, or if Weber doesn't want a trade to Edmonton than some other top D! it might prove as problems in the future for cap space.. but Ryan is only 5.1 cap hit and the cap significantly increases every year! plus if we do give up a few important pieces now for Ryan, and are unable to sign him for a decent extension in couple years.. i think we could still get a lot of pieces back for him if we trade him then! but this way Oilers will be ready to make a push now for the next couple years!! and we could probably attract more UFA's later if we have to trade some of our players

Clouts what would u think of signing Peter Mueller for a season cheap? He's got some size, and lots of talent. He'd prolly come cheap too.

Keep a couple things in mind:

- Arnott would be a two-season stop gap until the Oilers find/develop a quality 2nd line center with size.

- The second the Oilers can get rid of Horcoff, he's gone. His ugly contract says he's here for a few more seasons. Anton Lander will be more than ready to take him place as 3rd line center when it happens.

I think Mueller has huge talent. Bad injury history. My only question is where he could fit.

I agree about Curtis Lazar, as well. Brilliant future center, perfect for the Oilers 2nd line.

one good thing about the ridiculous contracts these days is that Horcoff's cap hit isn't looking as bad as it once did.. so maybe you are right we could trade him possibly! only problem would come that he has NTC, which could prove troublesome!

do you think he would agree for a trade to Calgary?? i mean him and some prospect/1st rounder for Jbo would be a good fit for the Oilers.. Jbo has size plus would be perfect fit for justin schultz!

I think the Oil could steal him next year. He's prolly top 5 talent in most drafts, but just with the ridiculous talent in that draft I think he slips to 7-12 at this moment. Obviously with it being a year away that will likely change.

Are you sure the oil get rid of horcoff? Once his ridiculous contract is up, i bet they keep him for a cheap 1.5-2.5 mil per season, defensively he is what they need on the bottom 2 lines and on the PK, plus a vet. I know Pilgor has already given up on PRV but need look no further than him for a big left winger, assuming they can teach him to play like a big left winger and not a sweedish wussy

I don't see Arnott improving what we have right now at centre frankly, so the whole thing hinges on being able to swing a deal with Gagner to make it work. Who knows what Gagner could fetch. Obviously subtracting Gagner + whoever else and adding Yandle and Arnott puts us ahead of where we are now, but that has more to do with the Yandle-Gagner contigency than it does Arnott.

I think Horcoff's contract will go to term. No one will ever want him imo, not even for one season. Since we can't do anything about him, might as well appreciate that he's a good two-way 3rd line centre for right now. The only real knock on him in that role is his brutal contract. And I agree, Lander could very well become the future third line guy. That being said, in 2015 if Horcoff wants to re-sign as a bottom 6 centre (4th line probably) for one or two years, 1.5 mil or so, I would be happy to have him back.

THIS. I don't get why everyone wants to get rid of Horcoff. Realistically he's a great third line center, just way overpaid for it. He's made his money, went through the garbage years of the team, keep him on and I bet he stays cheap.

Great minds think alike. Without getting too ahead of myself

Pitlick-RNH-Ebs (two finesse guys and a bit of functional toughness)
Hall-XXX-Yakupov (two cannonballs and hopefully a solid two-way guy)
PRV-Lander-Hartikainen (Good leadership, energy and all-around skill)
XXX-Horcofff-XXX (A shutdown line centered by a wily veteran with weird husky eyes)

By the time his contract expires, he's 36 years old, he's grossed about 47 million dollars in his career, and he'll have only played for one team ever. He'll want to end his career here for a reasonable rate, especially if we're competitive.

he's a great third line centre but the cap hit does matter.. that could spent elsewhere! and most importantly it matters because it doesn't give lander a chance for three years! i don't think lander will be staying with this team as a 4th line centre for that long! and he would be a perfect fit for the 3rd line.. especially if we can maintain hartikainen on his wing! we have NO choice but to trade him.. lander is younger/cheaper/and has the same potential as horcoff..

They gave Lander a solid shot last year. If he is ready he'll be given another shot.
