There's still decent options there for a top-6 forward. Lets hope they can be gotten for a fair price. The Devils have $15M+ in theoretical cap space. |

I really wanted P.A. Parenteau as the alternative to Parise, but since Zach took a while to sign and Parenteau signed in Colorado (to a pretty rich contract), that ship has sailed.
Semin? No thanks. Mueller? Nope - close, but still nope.
I think Shane Doan would be the best fit. Sure, he's 35, but he brings it every night and is gritty and rugged enough to play 70-75+ games. I'd toss a 3-year, $5M per year in his general direction.

we all know this is Kovi's team now.
kovi with the C
Zajac with an A
elias with an A - tomburton99
Maybe the C would change him, but I have my doubts. Kovy'd have to further change his game into being more of a hitter. I think Salvador played like a real warrior in the playoffs and could be a good team captain.
NJ should see what it takes to get Patrick Kane from Chicago, aside that (not to make him captain). Even Evander Kane. Both have been involved in rumours lately.
But I doubt NJ makes a move at all, lest they bring in Mueller for cheap.
We'll be a 100 point team next year again, anyway. |

Shane Doan is staying out West, even if he doesn't re-sign in Phoenix. In the event he does come East, I highly, highly doubt it would be with New Jersey.

While Jersey offers Doan the chance to win a championship, I just doubt Doan considers the Devils over the other teams interested in him. |

And I'm not sure if Lou has learned his lesson with 35+ contracts yet. Mogilny, Rolston... they always work out. |

We are 15+ million under the cap floor. We have to spend the money. |

Alfi and Sedin don't have Stanley Cups and Crosby won it with Malkin winning the conn smythe, and Crosby's the best player in the world. I don't at all doubt Alfi's heart, I think he's a great player. Henrik is also a pretty damn good player. But Kovalchuk was captain for how many years in Atlanta and they did not make the playoffs. He's still a minus player for a reason; you compare him with Dustin Brown, sure he'll put up more points in a season but Brown's +16 in the playoffs to his -7 tells you everything you need to know.
Kovy's a premium mercenary/gun player to have and I love him on New Jersey, but I don't confuse him for being the hired gun he should be. It takes more to be a captain than just getting points. He gets on the scoresheet often as his precision passes and shots make him so deadly, but he's still working on the part of his game where he turns the puck over. He led the league in giveaways by a long shot; that's not a coincidence. He's not a great stickhandler. It takes for responsible centers to keep his game leveled off. You can't blame anyone for not being comfortable with him being the leader of the team if he's often giving the other team that kind of momentum through turnovers.
Turnovers are a momentum killer and captains are supposed to do precisely the opposite (win it back); if he's not a "meat and potatoes" type player even though he's the biggest player on New Jersey, he should become one if he wants to wear that C, even if it means costing him 10 points in the regular season. |

We are missing two wingers. One can be filled by Tedenby. The other is up for questioning unless Bernier moves up to the third line and Janssen or Barch play on the fourth line. If we don't sign anyone, our topsixis Elias Zajac Kovalchuk Zubrus Henrique Clarkson. I know I would prefer Clarkson on the third line and another guaranteed top six winger signed. |

I forgot +/- determined which players are elite. Jeff Schultz was +50 one year... what does that tell you? |

Tedenby is probably going to get called up. They're really only missing one F to finish a decent line-up, and Harrold can play forward as he did the game Kovalchuk returned. |
