Great read. Good for Carle, it worked out for him. Glad we dont have those large cap hits for the other 2 guys. Next offseason there are huge names and Id rather be a player then than now. Let the kids grow together this year. I would figure out what the hecks going on with Jake, these huge contracts aren't helping with his situation imo.

good blog write-up Bill...I personally am not that upset that any of these events didn't occur. We have seen them spends loads of money before only to either regret it or just move the player. It is hard for me to believe that this team will (can) be any worse defensively than it was in the playoffs. It is just that they aren't going to be paying exorbitant amounts of salary for that poor play. IMO they are in a better position long term; aka next years trade deadline. I believe they will attempt to address the D then. Also, they are in an excellent position now to go after Weber. Go Flyers!

Sigh.

The Flyers continue to poorly manage the cap and it bit them in the @ss.

They Flyers could have signed Carle during the season, to a friendly cap hit, if they managed the cap properly.

For anyone who wants to pretend that the Walker and Shelley deals haven't had a negative impact on this team, look no further then this Carle fiasco.

As any player, he chased the money versus working with a team that has a reputation of trying to win each and every year.
As for Carle being upset...I don't know. Players know each year where they fit in the pecking order (IMO) and he knew the Flyers were going to chase Suter and Parise. Adding the fact that Pronger is not going to come back, the Flyers need someone to replace him.

With him signing with Tampa, so be it. Maybe, just maybe with the defense the Flyers are putting together, it will force them to play better TEAM defense.

Good work as always Bill. I'm glad they didn't sign Carle -- I was definitely disappointed in not getting parise/suter, but I think I was more upset that I spent so much time following it

It might be hard to trade for Bobby Ryan now....unless they take Voracek, Read and a first without including a defensemen. But I doubt that -- but if they did that, we would then sign Doan to fill a forward spot. who the hell knows.

I hear ya double G but the reason they couldn't sign him was due to tagging space during the year.

Can we get Hartnell and Timmonen to waive
their NMC / NTC to go back to Nashville for
Weber? Add some picks if necessary. And then
Go after Doan hard. While I realize Timmo is getting
long in the tooth, Hartsy had his best year last
year. If we add a pick we would need to get
Weber extended first.

Why in the world would Kimmo (maybe his last season in the NHL) have any meaningful value for Shea Weber (top 3 D-man in the league entering prime years)?

Poile could offer Weber $10 million a year for 15 years & he would still have to think about it.

He should start the auction now

I am no cap geek so please be patient.

But if the Flyers don't have the Shelley and Walker contracts doesn't that free up the space for the extra money that would have been needed to sign Carle to, lets say, 4.75 mil deal?

Kind of harsh blog today Bill. Are you really angry we didn't get either guy for 13 years? And its not like we really lost out on anyone significant in the process. Maybe the Flyers never had a good chance at either but hey, you gotta be in it to win it.

I think the potential mistake going forward is going after Doan. The whole reason he is a ufa is because he's waiting to see what's to become of ownership in Pheonix. By all accounts he wants to be there. Not to mention we're entering the phase where cap floor overpayments begin. Not to mention this team really doesn't need yet another over 35 contract.

May not have mattered. See Bill's analogy of trying too woo another woman while asking your wife to wait on a shelf & thinking you can go back to her after being rejected, perfect analogy!

At that point (no Shelley/Walker) they'd have had to choose between doing Grossmann or Carle. Given their styles, I'd have done Carle (if all the stuff about him really wanting to stay and signing for "below market value" was ever really genuine).

It seems to me that not having he tagging space was the only mistake the flyers made. The rest of the things that happened were a consequence of that. It's seems to me that after they were not able to sign carle until after 7/1 they did the right things and I am very happy that neither S or P ended up in the east.

I think he's talking about having the tagging space during the season to resign Carle so that he never became a UFA in the first place, so there'd have been no courting Suter

Right, but he never committed to Carle because of the sexier Suter sitting out there

As well, Carles agent is no dummy, with a very light market he had to play the patient game & wait

You have to think the Flyers have a backup plan or obviously know something we don't. Right?

The Flyers were stuck between a rock and a rock. You can't pay Carle more than Coburn under any circumstance.

Without exactly knowing the numbers, it could have also been that they didn't have the offseason tagging space to legally sign Carle to an extension during the season once they locked up Coburn. Grossmann signed 1-1.25M less than what Carle probably would have gotten. That increased amount of money may have just not been available in the offseason cap

They know both of these players. Kimmo may be at the
end, but they may be able to get 2 or 3 more years
out of him. Hartnell is in his prime. AND PICKS... Maybe 1st and a 2.
Maybe Read.

They still have a potentially good team on paper, but it requires players to either step up their game (Briere, Bryz, Meszaros, sophomores) or at least stay at last season's level (Hartnall, Simmonds, Read). It could be asking for too much good things to happen.... but evenything could mesh nicely.

The new CBA will terminate excessive long term deals (Luongo, Kovalchuck, Parise, Suter). Weber has his shot this year. So, this morning Poile will offer him $98m over 13 years. Weber will accept or reject the deal. If he rejects the deal, Poile starts taking offers. My guess is he already knows what he can get from the teams that might bid. You would have to think the Flyers are a leading contender.
