FIST!!!

I think shero got a really good return on staal. I know if I was Carolina I would've just waited one season then got him for nothing. It was nice that shero did in fact trade him to where he wanted to go and not just to the highest bidder. Classy move by both gm's

Staal was great, and a big reason the pens won their cup in 09 was because of 1-2-3 punch we got from all of our centers (and better defensive play). but staal has always been one of my favorite penguins. cant wait for my sister to move to n. carolina so i can catch a pens/canes game. def gonna wear my staal pens shirt

You guys (depending on what you do with the cap space) are closer to a cup than you were before you traded Staal. What a ballsy move by Shero, but one I think that worked out well.

As per the proposals that Staal + Martin could fetch Sutter, the 8th and Faulk, I'll just do a teency bit of ribbing, as I'm sure you will to oilers fans if/when Gagner doesn't fetch what we'd expect:

On the subject of Martin: Why did Shero opt to clear Mihalek instead? Same term, less cap hit, more useful player, and the return wasn't that great for him.

I'm sure he would have rather moved Martin if given the choice. If you were Maloney, would you want Martin or Michalek? Shero just did the deal to clear space for something bigger.

Sure, but if you're only getting three AHLers for Mihalek, why not just keep him and get one AHLer for Martin? I find it hard to believe there were litterally no takers.

They're not done yet.

edit- Shero is on record as saying he had multiple offers for Martin.

Well for the record Edmonton would probably take him for Phillipe Cornet or Linus Omark

Seriously there's a whole roster of dmen (Komisarek, Ballard, Martin and JBo to name a few) that probably just need a change of scenery.
Also, I'm excited to see what the pens do with 14 million in cleared space. If they get Suter, I'll wait patiently here until Sidney brings the cup past my front door.

A week ago I might have been hesitant. While I'm happy with the draft haul, we need to start acquiring d men that can play top 4 minutes. The only hesitation now is about term. If they introduced cap restructuring in the new CBA I'd be all over that trade.

Not sure why the hate for Martin...he wasn't all that bad last year. He didn't live up to the 5mil his contract is, but it's not like he totally stunk it up. He had an off year, his first in a new system...understandable. Teams that play a defensive system like NJ/NASH or who need a breakout passer like TB/EDM/etc are definitely interested...

Why no trade already? Well, because he has value to the pens too...it's a risk to deal him without a replacement. Not sure if Niskanen is enough, as then we have no decent guys at 5/6 - just rookies. They will need to land Suter/Yandle/etc to play with Letang first. Then Orpik can move to 3/4 and then Niskanen+Orpik is OK, 5/6 is up for grabs now, especially if the pens would like to get into a trade for Ryan (if no Parise)...it would cost Despres + Morrow + Kennedy +++, but Ryan+Crosby would be INSANE.

That's more speculation in any event...my main point was wrt to Martin not totally sucking as many people seem to think...how many of you watched most of the pens games??

Oh, as for what a return would get...I'm thinking a 2nd round pick or a decent prospect is coming back to the pens...maybe both if they package Martin + Bortuzzo/Strait...

After this past weekend, I'm on the edge of my seat for July 1st. Especially if it is true the Shero has his hands in many sinister soups.

I'd be happy as a pig in poop if he could deal Martin, and get the likes of Suter and/or Parise. I wouldn't mind seeing Tangradi and Kennedy being involved in a trade. The teams need grit and frankly I've grown really bored with both of those guys.

Z wanted to go. During the locker cleanout day, one of the reporters/bloggers said that Z did not like the style the Pens played, as he was always going into the corners and getting hit while retrieving the puck, and had suggested that a change of scenery was wanted by Z.

Shero apparently agreed and took him up on his offer

i still think by the time it comes to resign your big guns, martin would be out of your hair. not to sound like a toronto fan, but if you guys dont expect him to be karlsson i really think he could be decent for you guys. he didnt become a complete bum out of no where. hes just misused and a little overpaid

I'm actually stunned Edmonton couldn't put a better package together for Michalek, I think he would have been a really nice fit on the Oilers.

Exactly. Definitely Suter...we could sign Ray Whitney at at good price, or gamble on David Moss (who I think is a perfect in PITT fit btw). Whitney for 2 years 8mil...OK. In the meantime a prospect may develop, even Tangradi, or we sign somebody else over the next couple of years...more cap friendly move too...

Might not be a unanmous, 'sexy' pick, but PA Parenteau is out there as well for the cheaper.

Unrelated, if the Pens miss on there targets, how does the masses feel about Alexander Semin....

Edit: We could always trade a couple of our 500 D prospects for a solid winger ala Go-Go for Neal or Whitney for Kunitz
